With Halloween just over a week away, the Billings Fire Prevention Bureau wants to remind everyone that some haunted houses can be scary for more than just the spooky thrills. “The fun features involved with haunted houses are extremely dangerous in the event of a fire. Haunted houses typically create limited visibility, disorientation, and do not have the proper fire protection systems to keep occupants safe in an emergency,” said Billings Fire Marshal Jaime Fender. Haunted houses fall under fire code requirements for Special Amusement Buildings. The International Fire Code lists detailed requirements, including a fire detection system that automatically illuminates directional exit signs and a way out, stops all sound effects, and begins playing a prerecorded voice message that can be heard throughout the building, instructing patrons to proceed to the nearest exit. Just earlier this month, the New York Fire Department shut down a two-story house that was illegally converted into a haunted house, calling it a death trap. And that isn’t an overstatement. After eight teenagers died in the 1984 Haunted Castle fire, provisions were added to the fire code to prevent future tragedies. Proper permits and inspections are required to transform any indoor space into a haunted house. Those can be obtained by contacting the Billings Fire Prevention Bureau. Without these in place, haunted houses are illegal in the City of Billings. “The Billings Fire Department wants people to have fun on Halloween, but we also want them to be safe,” said Fire Marshal Fender. The Billings Fire Department open house and community safety day is back again! Stop by Fire Station 1 THIS Saturday (Oct. 5) from 10 to 2 to learn from and interact with your Billings Fire Fighters! This comes the weekend before the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) kicks off Fire Prevention Week™ 2024. This year's theme is "Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work For You!™" These three actions will ensure your smoke alarms are working for you: INSTALL - Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home. TEST - Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button. REPLACE - Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or stop responding when tested. We hope to see you on Saturday! 👩🏼🚒👨🏼🚒🚒

✈️ Things keep looking up at Billings Logan International Airport! ✈️ For the first time in the airport’s history, there were 50,000 passenger boardings each month this past July and August. The previous record before this was 49,986 enplanements in July of 2019. BIL also exceeded 100,000 aircraft operations in the past 12 months for the first time in nearly two decades. “We are excited to reach these milestones in passenger and aircraft activity at BIL,” said Director of Aviation and Transit Jeff Roach. “This is another positive outcome of the air service development effort by BIL and our community partners. We look forward to many more achievements as we continue adding flights to new and existing destinations and expand the outstanding air service already offered at BIL.” Thank YOU for choosing BIL!✈️ ✈️ ✈️

!!ATTENTION!! READ FOR DETAILS ABOUT STREET CLOSURE UNDER SKYPOINT DURING WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 15. The City of Billings Parks and Recreation Department is getting ready to complete renovations to downtown’s landmark Skypoint. The third round of maintenance will begin Sunday, September 15, and wrap up no later than Friday, Sept. 20, 2024. New sails and electrical upgrades will be installed during this final stage. Previous touch-ups since work began in September of 2023 include removal of the old sails, cleaning, and fresh paint. The 22-year-old landmark needed maintenance after years of wind, rain, sunshine, and snow exposure. IMPORTANT TRAFFIC NOTICE: Broadway Avenue and 2nd Avenue North will be open for parking, but the intersection under Skypoint will be closed to thru traffic from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. (See included map) Barricades, signage, and caution tape will offer guidance and protection, but we urge drivers and pedestrians to take caution while traveling near Skypoint. The City Hall parking garage will be accessible by turning right onto 2nd Ave North from North 27th Street. Signage and cones will guide drivers in and out of the garage. The parking garage will be reduced to one entrance and one exit. (See included map) Please note, drivers should NOT attempt to turn left onto 2nd Ave North from North 27th Street as there is no left turn lane or traffic signal for lefthand turns. Also, the city hall parking garage will not be accessible from the neighboring alley due to the cones that will be set up to guide cars entering and exiting the garage. We thank everyone for their patience during this time and will make adjustments to traffic control if necessary.

🚸 After a nice summer break, the school zone flashers have been programmed to sync perfectly with the new school calendar in preparation for back-to-school📅 From holidays to early outs and parent-teacher conferences, everything is programmed in for optimal traffic safety and efficiency! What excites our team even more is that as we make necessary upgrades, we’ve been able to switch some of the flashers to solar-powered ones which helps us go greener! 🌞 Plus, thanks to cellular technology, some of the new flashers allow us to program right from the shop which improves our service efficiency ⚡️ As the new school year gets underway, please remember to slow down, stay alert, and watch for children in all school zones. Wishing everyone a safe & fantastic school year ahead! 🎒✨ #BillingsPublicWorks #BillingsMT #CityofBillings #BackToSchool #SchoolSafety #SolarPower

🚧 Believe it or not, cutting streets open is not fun for us either 🤣 and we try to avoid it whenever possible~ 🦺One way we do that is with an innovative trenchless process called pipebursting. Our Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection team has been using pipebursting for the past 18 years to replace aging and problematic water and sewer mains🚰 🙌Every year, our dedicated team identifies water and sewer mains around town that need replacing. Based on factors like location, age, and pipe material, a plan is devised to tackle these replacements, either in-house or with a contractor. Performing in-house pipebursting in qualified residential areas costs the city half as much as using a contractor~ Replacing 3000 to 4000 feet of water main and sewer main through pipebursting not only saves millions of dollars for our city but also means less disruption to our residents’ daily lives 🏡 While we might see a lot of construction activities and experience some inconvenience, please know that these are signs of necessary improvements being made. We do our best to minimize open cuts whenever possible🌟 Thanks for your patience and support as we work to improve our city's infrastructure during construction season! 🚜🛠️ #billingspublicworks #cityofbillings #CityImprovements #Pipebursting #TrenchlessTech
