I've been contributing to a ballot initiative project through Civic Tech DC that has the potential to help track and process petition signatures more efficiently. Essentially this would make it quicker and easier to get popular measures on the ballot. Our initial stakeholders have not been in contact and we are now conducting a stakeholder search. If you are in the DMV and know any organization that needs to process a lot of petition signatures, please message me with the details. Civic Tech DC is a non-profit incubator for civic welfare tech projects and the tool we're creating is available free of charge, we're just looking for user feedback to make it better. If you're outside of DC the same applies, but given that we're based in DC there are logistical considerations. Also, if you're someone with an interest in creating some element of social good through tech, join us in-person at one of Civic Tech DC's project nights or on slack.

I'm honored to have been named to Technical.ly's RealLIST Engineers of 2024, which recognizes technologists making a significant impact and demonstrating leadership in the DMV ecosystem. It's a privilege to be included among such talented and influential individuals. My journey in civic tech has been incredibly rewarding, and I'm grateful for the opportunities I've had at Fearless. Their support has been instrumental in my growth and our shared mission to innovate in the civic tech space. I'm especially passionate about helping develop the civic tech community in the DMV area. The volunteers who join our events at Civic Tech DC truly represent the best parts of the DC tech scene—dedication, creativity, and a commitment to making a positive impact. Thank you to everyone who joins me on this journey and invests their passion and time. Let's keep building and delivering value to our communities! What problems do you think about in your local community? If our recent meetup exploring urban heat islands interested you, check out the workshop below. Thanks for the heads up Puneet Kollipara!
Attention SCGIS Community! We are so excited to announce that we will be holding pre-conference online workshops this August! Joseph J. Kerski – How to use and analyze geospatial data for climate research and teaching. August 16, 2024, 5:00pm - 7:30pm. Intermediate Experience. What are the key ways in which GIS and geospatial workflows can be used to identify and analyze climate data for research and teaching? These workflows, data, and tools will be examined with a focus on extreme urban heat. Where does extreme heat occur, how does tree cover affect heat, and how do we determine the vulnerable populations affected? After describing the topics, workflows will be demonstrated, case studies shown, and data sources discussed. This workshop will feature hands-on components using ArcGIS Online. Woven through the course are discussions and short activities touching on scale, data quality, ethics, and greater societal implications. Miriam Schmidts - Spatial and Imagery Analysis in ArcGIS Pro. August 23, 2024, 5:00 - 7:30pm. Any Experience Level. This workshop is going to explore different raster and imagery analysis workflows, starting with cost distance analysis, building a model to connect mountain lion habitats. It will look into raster suitability analysis to prioritize conservation areas, perform change detection and finish with an image classification workflow using deep learning Aleksander Zudkin - Python Basics for Environmental Specialists. August 31, 2024, 2:00pm - 6:30pm. No Experience/Beginner Experience. This workshop will look at the basic constructions and objects - variables, functions, loops, basic data types (int, float, str, list, tuple, dict) and operations with it. There will be several practical cases for basic skills to solve and a small module in a GIS case. Some homework will be given to consolidate skills! Register here: https://lnkd.in/gUXTpxnN For more information on software requirements or general inquiries, please email us at conferencequestions@scgis.org
