Cadets from our Georgia Wing supplied humanitarian relief after Hurricane Helene devastated the city of Augusta. A week after the storm, Augusta was placed on a boil-water advisory and had limited power restored. As relief efforts began, the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency called on Civil Air Patrol for assistance. #CivilAirPatrol #CAPMission #Helene

About us
Established in 1941, Civil Air Patrol is the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and as such is a member of its Total Force. In its auxiliary role, CAP operates a fleet of 555 single-engine aircraft and 2,250 small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) and performs about 90% of all search and rescue operations within the contiguous United States as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. Often using innovative cellphone forensics and radar analysis software, CAP was credited by the AFRCC with saving 108 lives last year. CAP’s 56,000 members also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. As a nonprofit organization, CAP plays a leading role in aerospace education using national academic standards-based STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education resources. Members also serve as mentors to over 23,000 young people participating in CAP’s Cadet Programs.

On this day in 1920, Air Force Col. Gail Halvorsen, the Civil Air Patrol alum who brought candy and comfort to deprived German children during the 1948-1949 Berlin Airlift, was born. Halvorsen dropped candy and gum to the children below using handkerchiefs fashioned into tiny parachutes. Before joining the U.S. Army Air Corps, he was in one of the earliest Civil Air Patrol flight training programs shortly after CAP’s formation Dec. 1, 1941. Halvorsen died Feb. 16, 2022, in Provo, Utah, after a short illness. He was 101. #CivilAirPatrol #candybomber #WWII

We congratulate the cadets from the Puerto Rico Wing’s Dr. Cesareo Rosa-Nieves Cadet Squadron who claimed the squadron’s second straight Southeast Region Cadet Competition title. The wing participates in many unique operational missions due to its location; and includes the U.S. Virgin Islands as well. The Florida Wing’s Homestead Air Reserve Base Cadet Squadron 279 team finished as runners-up in the competition. Third place went to the cadet team from the Georgia Wing’s Augusta Composite Squadron.
