CEE is proud to share the news that one of our staff, Project Coordinator Matthew Rose, has won the Diversity & Inclusion Award, one of the annual Stanford University School of Engineering Staff Service Awards. With a talent for creating a welcoming and inclusive environment wherever he goes, Matt’s work “has profoundly impacted not only the School of Engineering but the broader Stanford community, promoting a culture of respect and understanding,” say his nominators. His work on the SoE Connect Committee includes planning its first Black History Month event—now an annual tradition—and he’s provided strong support to activities including recent Asian American & Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander and mental health awareness events. Beyond such events, “It’s his everyday positive attitude, empathy, and heartfelt engagement with his peers that make him a treasure within the School of Engineering,” say nominators. Congratulations, Matt!

"For most countries around the world, sourcing energy entirely from wind, solar, geothermal, and hydropower by 2050 would reduce their energy needs and costs, improve air quality, and help slow climate change, according to a Feb. 9 study in Environmental Science & Technology." Kristen Davis, who received her PhD from Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University in 2009, returned to Stanford last summer as Associate Professor in the new Oceans Department, part of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. "A hidden world teeming with life lies below beach sands. New Stanford-led research sheds light on how microbial communities in coastal groundwater respond to infiltrating seawater. The study, published Dec. 22 in Environmental Microbiology, reveals the diversity of microbial life inhabiting these critical ecosystems and what might happen if they are inundated by rising seas."
