An interesting look back at #covid19 and the important work Ali Boehm and WastewaterSCAN began then, which has grown and continues today.
Last week was the fifth anniversary of the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring #COVID19 a pandemic. Since 2020, #wastewater surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 has become a valuable public health tool, determining the presence of the virus and its variants circulating in wastewater and informing public health action to prevent potential outbreaks before they escalate. Now, there are many wastewater surveillance systems and programs across the globe that share valuable data and have expanded to monitor a variety of other pathogens in real time. WastewaterSCAN is one program that has been monitoring SARS-CoV-2 since late 2020 and now monitors 14 infectious disease targets in 40 states across the United States.
