When I finally realized that I was a lousy drummer and began focusing on live sound I worked as part of my brother Scott McVeigh’s stage crew at Michigan State University. We were the local crew on a concert - covering the ice in the hockey arena, setting up chairs (so many chairs), building the stage and, finally, interfacing with the touring party. It was there that I learned about sound companies, lighting companies, trucking companies, etc. and Clair Brothers was, quite often, the sound provider whose trucks we unloaded. This was around 1976 and the main loudspeaker from Clair was the S4, that huge all-in-one-heavy-as-hell-great-sounding box. Nobody that came through town was flying them, everything was ground stacked. With a body and skill set that were purely casters and covers I quickly learned where not to be during set-up. These days Clair Global is a worldwide operation, yet maintains a family vibe and that's what I wanted to learn more about.
