Earlier this summer a part of our Paris team moved to San Francisco to conduct a clinical trial. We rented an apartment, lived all together, worked heads down and completed half of a feasibility Alzheimer’s clinical trial within a month. It has been a long road to the first participants enrolled. Real sweat and tears. From the first sketches and notes in my master’s student bedroom to the launch of the company just 2 years ago and our first positive clinical data… Startups are difficult for all sorts of reasons. But going after a disease like Alzheimer’s with a novel sensory stimulation approach in early validation phase and aiming to be considered a disease-modifying treatment adds spice to the sauce. Not that I don’t like challenges. I love them and wouldn’t spend a single minute working on something else. But it takes true obsession, a lot of creativity, grit and resilience to get to the first data with very limited time and resources. And let’s be honest, most people look for quick fixes to moderately difficult problems to work on or invest in and not actual breakthroughs that can really change the human condition. Because those are very hard and paved by many roadblocks. From the early days, I have been fortunate to be joined by bold individuals who believe we can make an impact in brain health with more than just pharmaceuticals. Unsolvable problems will attract exceptional people who want more than a place to check in and out, and who will actually build something great with you that’s not just about the tech you are working on. As a founder, that feeling is worth all the struggles and sleepless nights. Working with people who truly care about the problem and are committed to pushing boundaries is what really matters. Without forgetting our early investors who trusted us and gave us the means of our ambitions. They have made me grow so much so quickly and I know they will continue to push me forward. So today, I wanted to share how proud I am of this team with a few pictures from our clinical trial, because startups are also about amazing memories. Even though it’s just the beginning, it’s a huge milestone for us, and a step towards new treatments for patients with neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Pablo Villoslada is an established neurologist with more than 20 years of experience in Translational Medicine (academia, biotech, medical devices, and big pharma) to develop new therapeutics (drugs, cell therapy, Neurostimulation) for neurological diseases. Formerly Adjunct Prof at Stanford Medicine and now Chair of the Neurology department at the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona. He is also a founder and advisor of several biotechs and Medtech in the field of CNS and Ophthalmology (Bionure/Accure, QMenta, SpiralTx, Attune Neurosciences, CLight, Adhera Health, NeuroPrex) and used to lead clinical developments at Genentech.
