Classical Renaissance art captured so much of history and Christianity. Discipleship and imitation are at the core of Paideia in history. This is only one of many reasons the art is charged with meaning and grandeur. Put Great Art up around your schools, homes, and workplaces. It calls you to greater things. The Call of St. Matthew is crucial in the story of the Gospel. Simple words: “Follow me.” What is your story, and how does it fit in the larger metanarrative? Literature forms us in ways many other subjects don’t. Reflection, sight, and spoken word moves the soul toward light and truth. We need literature to tell us our own story, tell us who we are. #classicaleducation #classicalconversations #classicalconsulting

A favorite ours. Go shake foil in the sun, or visit Assisi to watch olives being crushed. #classicaleducation #classicalconversations #classicalconsulting

Didactic, Socratic, Supervised. Adler’s Paideia Proposal is worth the discussion. Basically, this is quite groundbreaking and simple. The majority of the educational enterprise sticks to Telling and Coaching, missing Asking/Socratic. If they allow dialogue, it is only in the form of Q&A, amounting to supervised didactic. Asking/Socratic is a crucial element in education. It assumes the teacher as experienced learner and reveals clearly where students are at. It teaches extemporaneous thought and speech. When is the last time you used all three methods intentionally? #classicaleducation #classicalconversations #classicalconsulting

The ability to see the past, present, and future, including yourself is a rare gift. Classical education bolsters this vision. Many of us go through life without ever truly seeing. Have you encountered sight? Plato did. Others claim they have. At the very least, we can enter the conversation. Start today. Lift your eyes to the horizon. #classicaleducation #classicalconversations #classicalconsulting

The last in the series lineup: Philadelphia. The City of Brotherly Love. The focal point of theology, philosophy, law, and government, not to mention freedom, liberty, and equality. Both of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution stand as a beacon of hope on the shoulders of the other four cities. You can see a clear lineage between them. “But what is government itself but the greatest of all reflections on human nature? If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to government men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary.” Madison, Federalist 51. Aristotle says in the Politics, “Wherever many things are directed to one, we shall always find one at the head directing them.” Augustine in City of God, “Just men command, not by the love of domineering, but by the service of council. The natural order of things requires this; and thus did God make man.” Aquinas in ST I.96.4, “The condition of man in the state of innocence was not more exalted than the condition of the angels. But among the Angels some rule over others; and so one order is called that of Dominations. Therefore, it was not against the dignity of the state of innocence that one man should be subject to another.” #classicaleducation #classicalconversations #classicalconsulting

London. The last European city in the lineup before Philadelphia. Known for its civil rights and liberty, the Magna Carta, and its rich heritage of culture and learning. While Hobbes may or may not be a good representative of Great Britain and London, he is of modern society. His Leviathan captures the spirit of the age in a deep and thoughtful manner. The heartbeat is his overall argument throughout the book, minus the Kingdom of God in the background. States come and go, returning to the state of nature and dipping into war at any moment. Whether they are peaceful revolutions (elections) or violent, Hobbes reveals the anatomy and physiology of society. #classicaleducation #classicalconversations #classicalconsulting

Hailed as the greatest proof the age, Euclid’s Elements, Book 1, Proposition 47, is the culmination of the entire book’s project. Absolutely beautiful in form and logic. Euclid is a must read and must study. Lincoln found him worth studying and imitating, along with so many others throughout the ages. His logical proofs guide the greatest of speeches. Euclid is to Newton, as Lobachevsky is to Einstein—assumed and to be conquered, but unconquerable. #classicaleducation #classicalconversations #classicalconsulting
