YASDE Update 3 --> Intelsat 33e (41748 / 2016-053B) breakup on 2024-10-19 Russian observations of the breakup. The evolution of #SpaceDebris fragments as tracked by Russia are illustrated in this video from a Telegram posting on the KIAM / ISON channel: https://lnkd.in/gY6kEuSY (t.me URL) The different symbols / colors correlate to the object area/mass (i.e., CrAM, AGOM). The energy of the breakup is evident from the very high relative velocities. Some objects have a "delta V" > 500 m/s. #RussianSpaceSurveillance #LongTermSustainmentOfSpace

  • 🚀 ESA’s Zero Debris Charter: Paving the Way for Sustainable Space Operations 🌍 The European Space Agency (ESA) has launched the Zero Debris Charter, a bold initiative aimed at reducing space debris and promoting the long-term sustainability of our orbital environment. The charter commits the ESA to take actionable steps to ensure that little to no debris is created by space operations after 2030. This is a crucial step for the space economy because the accumulation of debris in orbit poses significant risks to both current and future space missions, as well as to the safety of our orbital environment. 🌟 Why is this important? Space debris is a growing problem, with thousands of defunct satellites and millions of smaller fragments posing collision risks. The Zero Debris Charter is a key step toward mitigating these risks by encouraging responsible space operations and fostering global cooperation. By adhering to this charter, ESA is not only addressing the immediate challenges but also setting a global standard for sustainable practices in space. This aligns with the broader goal of ensuring that space remains a safe and accessible domain for all future endeavors. While this charter is non-legally binding, meaning that following it is voluntary for nations and organizations, it paves the way for future space sustainability initiatives within Europe and globally if it is properly adopted. How do you see the Zero Debris Charter influencing the future of space operations? • Policy’s Impact on Space Sustainability 🚀 Space sustainability isn’t just influenced by technology and economics—it’s profoundly shaped by policy and law. 📜 While technological innovations are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in space, policy gaps are hindering progress in crucial areas like debris management. For example, current space treaties lack modern provisions for addressing space debris, resulting in a fragmented approach where different nations and organizations have varying, sometimes unaligned, guidelines. This lack of a unified legal framework complicates global mitigation efforts. Additionally, outdated clauses in space laws, like the Outer Space Treaty’s (OST) national ownership and responsibility provisions, create legal roadblocks for debris removal and remediation efforts, slowing down initiatives that could clean up our orbits. However, policy can be dynamic and ever-changing. With the right reforms and new international agreements, we have the opportunity to overcome these challenges and ensure a sustainable future in space. 💬 What role do you think policy will play in shaping space sustainability — for better or worse? • 🌍 The Space Around Us: Out of Sight, Out of Mind? 🚀 While we marvel at the wonders of space exploration, the growing problem of space debris often goes unnoticed. But public awareness is crucial for driving the change we need. Space debris isn't just a technical issue - it's also a global concern. From the risk of collisions to the potential loss of critical satellite services, the stakes couldn't be higher. Without sustainable space operations, we risk turning our orbit into an impassable junkyard, threatening the future of exploration and innovation (do you remember that scene of Earth’s orbit in Wall-E?). 🌠 Why does this matter? A well-informed public is a major part of the driving force behind effective policy and industry standards. By understanding the urgency of sustainable space practices, we can collectively advocate for a cleaner, safer orbital environment. 💬 Let’s work together to bring this issue to the masses. How can we raise awareness and promote sustainability in space? Share your thoughts below! 👇 #CleanOrbitFoundation #SpaceSustainability #SpaceDebris #PublicAwareness

  • 🌌 The Current State of Space Debris: A Growing Concern 🛰️ As humanity’s presence in space continues to grow, so does the alarming accumulation of debris orbiting Earth. There are now over 36,860 tracked pieces of debris - most of them larger than 10 cm (as of September 2024).  The actual number of debris in orbit is likely in the millions when we consider smaller fragments. At the moment, there are projected to be over 40,500 pieces of debris over 10cm, 1,100,000 between 1-10cm, and over 130 million less than 1cm in size. From defunct satellites to spent rocket stages or even specks of paint, these objects pose a significant threat to active satellites and future missions. 🔍 So… what's out there? Large Debris: Approximately 3,000 non-functional satellites, some weighing several tons. Small Fragments: Millions of pieces smaller than 10 cm, often from collisions and disintegration. Rocket Parts: Spent upper stages and mission-related debris add to the clutter in orbit. This growing cloud of debris is a ticking time bomb, increasing the risk of collisions and threatening the safety of our orbital highways. 🚨 💬 Understanding these numbers is the first step in addressing the problem. We must act now to mitigate the risks and ensure a sustainable future for space exploration. How do you think we should tackle the issue of space debris?
