🚨 Access to clear communications during public health emergencies are essential to keep affected communities safe. We’ve seen from previous epidemic responses that barriers in language and communication will: 📉 Reduce access to information and services for groups who are already vulnerable. 🩹 Damage community members’ trust in health care workers and health communicators. ⛔ ️Reduce comprehension of guidance on recommended measures such as vaccination or going to clinics. 🔇 Compound the spread of rumors and misinformation. 📈 Increase burdens on community-facing staff in multilingual environments. In this brief, we present practical recommendations to mitigate language and communication challenges for those affected or at risk by the mpox outbreak. 🔗 Link to the document here: https://hubs.ly/Q02RZVcC0 #LanguageAccess #HealthEquity #HealthCommunication #mpox #mpoxOutbreak

🔍 While Large Language Models (LLMs) and language technology have been rapidly evolving, only a fraction of the world’s 7,000 languages are meaningfully online. A recent study suggested that LLMs can benefit professional translators. But there is still a huge gap for low-resource languages - and this could have grave consequences for the most marginalized. 🧠 This new blog by Aimee Ansari explores lessons from the new research. Findings point towards the need for language technology to develop inclusion efforts for low-resource languages. 📖A great read on this #InternationalTranslationDay: https://lnkd.in/dVr2VKJv Thanks to Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic, for posting the video on the study which inspired us to write this piece. #LanguageInclusion #LanguageTechnology

In today’s humanitarian landscape, access to reliable, impartial data is essential for effective crisis response. The H2H Network and its members have released a joint statement highlighting the need for stronger leadership, better coordination, and higher standards in humanitarian data and information management. They urge OCHA to adopt a more collaborative approach, involving technical partners and promoting ethical use of AI and crowdsourcing. By addressing these challenges, we can build a more unified, evidence-driven response. #HumanitarianResponse #DataForGood #AI #CrisisManagement
In a rapidly evolving humanitarian landscape, access to accurate and impartial data is critical for effective crisis response. The H2H Network and its members, comprising specialized humanitarian organizations, have released a joint statement that underscores the need for enhanced leadership, coordination, and standards in humanitarian data, information management (IM), and analysis. As OCHA reviews its IM and analysis functions, the H2H Network welcomes this focus and urges OCHA to embrace technical partners in a more collaborative approach. The statement provides key recommendations, including streamlining leadership, clarifying coordination roles, and enhancing partner engagement. It advocates for consistent data standards, protecting the credibility of data from political interference, and closing the gaps in technical capacities within the sector. Additionally, the statement calls for improving data platforms, integrating climate data, and promoting ethical use of AI and crowdsourcing. This collaborative effort aims to build a more unified and effective humanitarian response, while ensuring that decisions are driven by evidence and not political agendas. The H2H Network and its partners remain committed to supporting OCHA in shaping solutions that will ultimately strengthen the sector's ability to respond to the needs of crisis-affected populations.
