“It’s just a small expense, no big deal” --- ever said [or thought] that to yourself? You're certainly not alone, but every coffee, every app subscription, and every supply run counts. When you skip tracking even small expenses, here’s what can happen: 1. Surprise Cash Flow Problems 🚩: Those little charges add up fast and can leave you wondering where your money disappeared to. 2. Missed Tax Deductions 💵: Less tracking means fewer deductions—and that’s money that could be back in your pocket! 3. Limited Insights 🔍: Without a clear picture of where your cash is going, it’s hard to make smart, confident business decisions. Tracking everything may seem tedious, but it’s worth it. Get in the habit now, and watch how those “little expenses” turn into serious savings! Want some help with ideas to more easily make a habit out of tracking your expenses? Don't be like Janet. I help small businesses understand and manage their finance. I do the books; you keep your marbles | Virtual Bookkeeper
About us
A LITTLE ABOUT ME? SO GLAD YOU ASKED! Jared Wennstrom here. I'm a bookkeeping professional, recently transplanted to the Southampton, St. Louis neighborhood, and loving it! I'm not going to sugarcoat it: for most business owners the books are a serious drudgery. One way to combat that is to have someone thump you on the head with a stout length of oak until you no longer care. Another way is to just hire me, and stop worrying about it. FIRST, SOME BONA FIDES... 1. I'm a Bookkeeper Launch graduate 2. I have an Associate Digital Bookkeeper certification 3. QuickBooks Online has accepted me as a Certified ProAdvisor 4. I've had other professional careers (including "small business owner")! NOW THE MORE INTERESTING STUFF... I am a US Army veteran, and love the outdoors, fishing and camping. I'm a good cook, and I'm pretty handy around the house. My wife and I recently moved to Saint Louis, MO from Central Texas. Most of our children (and all our grandchildren) are here. Also, Saint Louis has four seasons; not just "too hot" and "almost too hot". In Austin we owned and ran a successful craft brewpub for almost five years. We loved the craft beer industry, but sold the brewpub for health-related reasons. I couldn't imagine going back to work for anyone else so I began looking for other ways to make a living. Bookkeeping, as it happens, plays to a lot of my strengths! WHY AM I DOING THIS? Besides having to pay bills, here are the top reasons: 1. I have a unique perspective. I have experience as a small business bookkeeping CLIENT and I know what a lot of small business owners want, but might be reluctant to ask for. 2. Bookkeeping is a relationship business. Working to increase your business success is exciting for me! 3. I'm a detail oriented person - ask any of my previous staff! 4. I am a RAGING NERD for order and accuracy. You can now take advantage of my peculiarities for our mutual benefit! Would you like some help with your books?

This week begins my new small business series! I'm switching topics from cash flow considerations to something near and dear to my heart: helping small businesses protect against unexpected expenses. The inaugural post in this series is about building an emergency fund. Business can be full of surprises—some good, some…not nearly as awesome---and EXPENSIVE. Whether it’s unexpected repairs, a slow sales month, or a sudden opportunity, having a cash reserve can make all the difference! Here are a few great reasons to consider building a contingency fund: 1. It will help cover surprise expenses without stressing over where the money will come from. 🛠️ 2. By setting cash aside, you won’t have to rely on loans or credit to get through a tough time. 💸 3. Unexpected costs won’t disrupt your cash flow or slow down operations. 📉 4. An emergency fund can help you jump on exciting chances to grow, like a new project or a big order. 🚀 Even a small fund can offer a big sense of security. Set aside a little each month—future you will thank you! #SmallBusiness #FinancialPlanning #EmergencyFund #BusinessTips #CashFlow #EntrepreneurLife

🚫 Why Mixing Personal and Business Finances Is a Risky Move 🚫 It might seem convenient to use personal finances for business needs, but it could create problems for your business in the long run! Here’s why keeping them separate is crucial: 1. Tax Headaches---When it’s time to file, sorting through mixed transactions can lead to errors, missed deductions, and even audits. 2. Legal Liabilities---Blurring the lines between personal and business assets can put your personal assets at risk in case of legal issues. 3. Cash Flow Confusion---It’s tough to get a clear picture of how your business is doing financially when your personal expenses are mixed in. You need clarity to make smart decisions! 4. Professionalism---Maintaining a separate business account shows you’re serious about your business, and it builds trust with clients, investors, and lenders. Take the time to separate your finances—it’s one of the simplest and most important steps you can take to protect your business! #SmallBusiness #BookkeepingTips #EntrepreneurLife #FinancialManagement #BusinessSuccess

We've made it to the end of the small business cash flow series! Next week: new topics! Some businesses are evergreen, meaning they're unlikely to experience highs and lows during different times of the year, however many are not. Are you in the second group? You’re not alone! Seasonality can have a big impact on your cash flow, but with the right planning, you can stay ahead of it. Here's how to prepare: ** Analyze Past Trends 📊: Look at your financial history to identify patterns in sales and expenses. Knowing when your busy and slow periods are can help you plan accordingly. ** Build a Cash Reserve 💰: Use those high-revenue months to save up for the slower times. An emergency fund can help you cover expenses when income dips. ** Adjust Your Budget 🛠️: Tailor your spending based on projected cash flow. You may need to cut back during slow seasons or invest more during peak times. ** Diversify Revenue Streams 📈: Consider adding new products or services to keep revenue coming in year-round, even in your off-season. Don’t let the ups and downs of seasonality catch you off guard! With the right strategy, you can stay ahead and keep your business financially stable all year round. #SmallBusinessTips #CashFlowManagement #SeasonalBusiness #FinancialPlanning #EntrepreneurLife

I'm just going to leave this here... Today's post is civic, not political in nature. Missouri opened its version of early voting today (actually a non-contested absentee ballot - a first for me), and I strongly encourage everyone who's eligible to exercise their right to vote! I would never presume to critique HOW people vote. I just feel strongly that everyone who is able should contribute at election time. Best wishes, friends! #Democracy #EarlyVoting #Election #Vote

We've reached the penultimate small business cash flow topic post in the series. One more, and we're on to a new topic---how time has flown! As all small business owners understand, the road of revenue can be bumpy—so why rely on just one source of income? Diversifying your revenue streams can help smooth out cash flow, reduce risk, and create new opportunities for growth. Here are some ideas to get started: 1. Offer New Products or Services: Think about complementary services or products that could provide extra value to your existing customers. 2. Create Passive Income: Consider digital products like eBooks, online courses, or subscription services that keep earning while you focus elsewhere. 3. Partner Up: Collaborate with other businesses in your industry to offer bundled packages or joint promotions. It’s a win-win! 4. Explore Different Markets: Expand your reach by targeting new customer groups or exploring new platforms—whether it’s e-commerce, consulting, or international markets. Diversifying isn’t just a safety net—it’s a smart strategy to grow and future-proof your business. #SmallBusinessTips #Entrepreneur #RevenueStreams #BusinessGrowth #Diversify #CashFlow
