Session token and JWT authentication are commonly implemented strategies in modern web applications, but both have their drawbacks. Session token authentication has been used for decades and is still in use today, but it can be a performance bottleneck when building distributed systems. JWT authentication offers fast request validation but does not elegantly handle the process of invalidating sessions should user tokens leak. Clerk implements a hybrid approach that combines the benefits of session token and JWT authentication while minimizing the downsides of both strategies.
