At display.io we’re focused on driving incremental revenue for publishers by offering non-disruptive, high-quality, low-latency ads that increase viewability and user engagement. To achieve this, we collect hundreds of signals, including data from our OM viewability client, ensuring a seamless advertising experience that benefits both publishers and advertisers. Historically, we relied on MongoDB for time-series analytics. Our initial MongoDB setup used collections similar to materialized views in ClickHouse, enabling pre-aggregation and quick responses to common queries based on specific dimensions. However, as our data grew and queries became more complex—especially those spanning longer periods—performance issues emerged. We faced high CPU usage, increased storage demands, and slower query response times. By mid-2023, we reached the physical write throughput limits on our MongoDB cluster. Rather than continuing to scale horizontally, we made the bold decision to migrate to a more suitable database for analytics—ClickHouse. The results have been incredible! We've experienced performance improvements across the board, particularly in our ability to store all raw historical data and execute queries up to 4x faster on raw data and 100x faster on aggregated data. Our MongoDB journey had its challenges, but migrating to ClickHouse was one of the best decisions we've made. JupySQL is a Python library that lets you run SQL and plot large datasets in Jupyter. It works with many backends, including chDB, so of course, we had to make a video showing how to use it! 🚀 We learn how to query the database 🔍 , save queries 💾, query with parameters, and plot a histogram 📊
