Making sense of what people think about climate change.
About us
Climate Barometer makes sense of what people think about climate change. An informed and responsive understanding of public and political opinion is crucial – for the climate movement, for journalists reporting on unfolding events, or for politicians who need a clear brief, fast. There’s an abundance of climate opinion insights. But data is scattered, so the story can be difficult to follow. Climate Barometer provides a signal in the noise, curating timely insights on what people think about climate change. By monitoring and interpreting opinion insights across a range of topics, themes and narratives, Climate Barometer supports informed decision making in the heat of the moment. And our twice-yearly survey of opinion on climate change helps make sense of changes over time.

A new study by Charles Ogunbode and colleagues has found that two-thirds of people around the globe have not heard of the term ‘climate justice’, and less than 1-in-5 feel they have a good understanding of what it means. But despite a lack of awareness about the terminology, 70% felt that climate change is driven by capitalism and colonisation. The study builds on previous work addressing engagement with climate justice, by suggesting that people are aware of the key issues underpinning climate justice, even if they don’t consciously link these with the concept. People’s beliefs about climate justice-related issues were also found to positively influence their climate actions and support for policies – suggesting there is much value in building greater awareness. A great guide to help parliamentarians understand and respond to the challenges of climate change was launched yesterday in the House of Commons, coordinated by the University of Exeter and Peers for the Planet. Alongside this much-needed report, one thing that MPs definitely need to have is a clear understanding of voters' views on climate change. How is public opinion on climate change and net zero changing over time? What’s staying the same? Some key takeaways based on two years of Climate Barometer tracker data and some wider polling: 🗳️ Voters across the political spectrum continue to support net zero by 2050 - support jumped to its highest level in 18 months after the election 🌱 Renewables remain highly popular across the political spectrum - most people believe renewables, not fossil fuels, are the best way of building the country’s energy security ♻️ Climate change isn’t a major dividing line for voters: most people want more, not less action on climate - the public also don’t blame climate policies for the high cost of energy bills, but believe that privatisation of energy companies, prioritisation of energy companies interests, and failure to reform the energy markets are primarily responsible 🌍 Many key planks of net zero are broadly supported by the public - support is lower if everyone is expected to pay for the cost of polices, regardless of income. But opposition is practical, not ideological: support can be built through ensuring that green policies are fairer to those on lower incomes For more of the climate data story to date: https://lnkd.in/emw-6B8Z
