✍️In this week's "Heat Signal" Blog, learn what the Climate Shift Index can tell us about: • Excessive heat, drought, & stressed corn production in Mexico • Reindeer drownings & puddled permafrost in Norway • How they are reducing waste & making wine out of bananas that are ripening too quickly from excessive heat in Malawi ℹ️ Read & learn more: https://lnkd.in/gk9NYfhB

A recent piece from Climate Central, Inc. reveals that since 1970 the fall season has warmed by 2.4 degrees on average across the United States. Warmer falls strain the grid by keeping cooling demand high for longer periods, delaying the relief brought by cooler autumn temperatures and making #energyefficiency measures more essential during this changing season. 🪸The Tropical Atlantic has been placed under a Category 4 (Extreme) Marine Heatwave by NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration Coral Reef Watch. Sea surface temperatures in this region are 30.2°C (86.3°F) to 30.4°C (86.8°F) -- as much as 1.8°C ABOVE average for October...and there is a climate change connection. Climate Shift Index: Ocean quantifies that the hot sea surface temperatures in the area of the Extreme Marine Heatwave have been made at least 600x-800x more likely due to human-caused climate change. This can have severe impacts on marine life, including fish, coral, seagrass, oysters, plants, and algae. Explore the map ▶️https://lnkd.in/gNWdPjkC

Nearly half a million school buses bring over 24 million K-12 students to and from school across the U.S. Most of them still run on diesel, putting children's health at risk and contributing to planet-warming pollution. But the good news is that the country is seeing promising growth in the number of electric school buses. As of June 2024, the U.S. fleet has grown to include 12,174 committed electric school buses — a 19-fold increase over the last five years. These cleaner alternatives bring numerous benefits to students, schools, and local communities, including: 💨 Cleaner air and fewer health risks 🌎 Less planet-warming pollution 💰 Cost savings 💪 Climate resilience Learn more in this new package from Climate Central, Inc. ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/gnctHRed

    • Graphic with a bar graph showing the increase in U.S. electric school buses. The y-axis goes from 0-12,000, and the x-axis goes from June 2017 to June 2024. June 2024 is marked at 12,174. The logo of Climate Central is featured at the bottom of the graph, along with graphics of school buses.

✍️In this week's "Heat Signal" Blog, learn what the Climate Shift Index can tell us about: • Prolonged drought in Ethiopia has prevented nearly 60% of kids in Ethiopia from attending school • Abnormal heat & rain blocking access roads for essential services and markets in vulnerable regions, heightening the impact of climate change on rural communities in Laos Read & learn more ▶ https://lnkd.in/g7gBZesK

Over 90% of school buses in the U.S. emit earth-warming pollution & reduce air quality for the students they carry. 🔋🚌...but that is changing at record pace! More than 234k students now ride electric buses to & from school in 49 states. - As of June 2024, electric school bus adoption in the U.S. has grown to include 12,174 total committed electric school buses.  - That’s a 19-fold increase over the last five years (since June 2019) - The West and South account for the most committed electric school buses, together accounting for about 64% of the national total. - At the state level, California leads in electric school bus adoption, with 3,110 committed electric buses. That’s more than four times as many buses as the next leading state: New York, with 764 committed electric buses. At 8:30pm EDT Wednesday, October 9th, #Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida as a Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120mph. Throughout its track, Milton was fueled by above-average, hot ocean temperatures made as much as 400-800x more likely due to climate change. The Climate Shift Index: Ocean was able to confirm the climate change fingerprint on *sea surface temperatures* under Milton & how much more likely they were made by carbon pollution: 🌊 Friday, October 4th: 20x (Disturbance) 🌊 Saturday, October 5th: 100x (Tropical Storm) 🌊 Sunday, October 6th: 500x (Category 1 Hurricane) 🌊 Monday, October 7th: 400-800x (Extreme Rapid Intensification) 🌊 Tuesday, October 8th: 100x (Category 5) 🌊 Wednesday, October 9th: 100x (Category 3 by landfall) Explore Climate Shift Index: Ocean ➡ https://lnkd.in/eURmE3FZ In general, warming oceans are fueling stronger tropical systems, which are the most costly weather disasters in the U.S. These warmer sea surface temperatures also contribute to an increased number of hurricanes that undergo rapid intensification. More details, science, and visuals about Hurricane Rapid Intensification and how climate change is making this process more common ➡ https://lnkd.in/g3nGMCug

Two new scientific reports showing that climate change is making #Helene and #Milton stronger, wetter, and more frequent--leading to more devastation. How we talk about weather matters. Because lives matter. Yes, there is a direct connection between the carbon pollution from burning fossil fuels and the intensity/frequency of these storms. And they are only going to get stronger, wetter, and more devastating if we don't accelerate our climate actions (such as renewable energy, electrifying transportation, climate-friendly farming).
