There are 3 MILLION miles of pipelines in the US– and they are constantly leaking methane, a potent greenhouse gas. And what’s even more alarming, these leaks are more prevalent in communities of color and low income households, disproportionately impacting the local air pollution and the public health. We need more comprehensive, stronger pipeline leak standards from US Department of Transportation & PHMSA that #CutMethane and help protect our communities now. Join us: https://bit.ly/3Kwu8zC

Did you know that US gas pipelines leak as much as 2.7M tons of methane into our atmosphere each year?! That is the same climate impact as ~50M passenger cars. Tell Secretary Pete to finalize comprehensive, strong pipeline leak standards and #CutMethane now. Learn more about how you can help: https://bit.ly/3Kwu8zC

As global temperatures continue to rise, glaciers begin to shrink. And for the Venezuelan state of Mérida, all of them have disappeared. https://nbcnews.to/4bTpkAc

DYK that the Permian Basin is the single-largest source of methane emissions in the US oil and gas industry?! This is because 1️⃣ the Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico produces more crude oil than any other in North America. 2️⃣ Drilling for oil means they also produce large volumes of "natural" gas. And 3️⃣ when fossil fuel companies aren't able to sell or transport all the gas due to pipeline capacity, they flare methane. This is bad news because methane is a greenhouse gas that is 80 times(!) more potent at warming our climate than CO2 over a 20-year period. The recent Financial Times column from API’s CEO extolls the virtues of American #LNG in aiding Europe’s energy crisis. However, it is disingenuous for the API to tout the #methane footprint of U.S. LNG while simultaneously being involved in legal cases seeking to overturn #EPA rules that are essential for cutting pollution from U.S. natural gas. These rules are crucial for minimizing methane emissions from the natural gas sector, ensuring that U.S. LNG can be a lower carbon option for global markets. Without robust regulations that level the playing field and hold all operators to the same high standards, the environmental claims regarding U.S. LNG's methane footprint lose credibility. The industry itself has shown that implementation of EPA’s rules is critical for future emissions reductions. The National Petroleum Council’s recent GHG study underscores the importance of these regulations, assuming significant reductions due in part to swift implementation of EPA’s rules. Additionally, companies like bp, Equinor, Oxy, PureWest Energy, and Exxon have expressed support for key aspects of the rules, with many already implementing some of the required measures. This internal support within the industry demonstrates the cost effectiveness, feasibility and business case for these regulations and the important role they must play in achieving substantial methane reductions. Increasingly, natural gas importers like the #EU are demanding better methane performance from the gas they purchase on global gas markets. Without strong regulations to ensure a competitive baseline from a methane perspective, US producers will find it more difficult to take advantage of this dynamic. Complying with these regulations and demonstrating low methane intensity in a credible way will be critical for U.S. LNG to remain competitive in the energy transition. It is time for the API to align its actions with its advocacy. While the organization talks about the benefits of U.S. LNG and its role in reducing global emissions, it must also support the necessary domestic regulations that make these claims valid. 📢 BREAKING NEWS FROM #SIDS4! The Marshall Islands just made a powerful statement at the United Nations's Small Island Developing States conference, becoming the 13th country to endorse the #FossilFuelTreaty! 🇲🇭 These island nations are on the frontlines of climate change, facing rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and an existential threat to their very existence. Dr. Hilda Heine, President of the Marshall Islands, said it best: "Fossil fuels are at the heart of the planetary crisis that we face today. We...know the dangers that fossil fuels pose, and the absolute necessity of addressing them as the urgent threat they are." The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty aims to halt the expansion of fossil fuels and pave the way for a just transition to clean energy. This is a critical step to keep us within the 1.5°C climate limit and protect vulnerable nations like the Marshall Islands. ☀️ Will other countries join this growing movement? We need ambitious climate action on a global scale to secure a livable future for all. Let's keep the pressure on for a cleaner future! #FossilFuelTreaty #ClimateAction #StandWithSmallIslands Learn more at: https://lnkd.in/dtcPm-3j
