Earlier this year heavy rains and resultant flooding devastated parts of southern Brazil, with significant loss of life and several hundred thousand displaced. Vulnerable communities have been hit hardest, with some people forced to seek refuge under bridges, in tents or in cars. Harms like waterborne illness continue to impact people months later. This catastrophic flooding event - which has now been linked to climate change, El Niño, and inadequate infrastructure - is a sobering reminder that the climate crisis is very much upon us and will require substantial and urgent investments to minimise the loss and damage that occurs as a result. It is also a reminder that local knowledge and expertise are a vital part of climate action. Climate Refugees has just returned from Central America, where we spoke to migrants, returned migrants, farmers and Indigenous communities devastated by disasters and more than a decade of drought. Everywhere we went in the Dry Corridor, a singular message was heard: “We are forced to migrate. We don’t want to leave our homes but we have to because of climate change.” With this new executive order, the Biden administration has once again demonstrated that border policy is its climate policy, knowing fully well that these policies will do nothing to help migrants and asylum seekers nor stem the climate crisis #asylum #climatechange #climatedisplacement #border
