CRA acknowledges the potential and vast implications of the incoming US administration for climate action, adaptation, and climate equity and justice - especially for the hottest, poorest parts of the world. Our resolve is strengthened by the European climate agency Copernicus statement saying that 2024 is expected to be the warmest year on record and the first year of more than 1.5ºC above pre-industrial levels. While CRA has chosen not to have a presence in Baku at COP29 this year, we recommit to our mission to support and strengthen the health and livelihoods of women and vulnerable communities facing extreme heat around the world. We will redouble our efforts to codesign and deliver solutions that bring more opportunity, choice, and decision-making to women facing climate-driven extreme heat. Thank you for being a part of our community and this movement. We will lean on and grow our solidarity and collaboration in the coming weeks and months. When women are climate resilient, we will all be climate resilient. We look forward to expanding this approach 🌍 and to incorporating all we've learned - thank you Swiss Re and Veronica Scotti, Gerry Lemcke, & Sumit Gupta! 🌡 🙏 When women are climate resilient, we will all be climate resilient!
There has been extensive discussion on the impact of climate change on health. We are taking a pragmatic approach by developing solutions to insure against the effects of extreme heat. In the summer of 2024, as a record-breaking heatwave swept across northern India, 46,000 women received insurance payouts to replace income lost due to the extreme heat that made working conditions unsafe. This innovative parametric solution was delivered in collaboration with our partners, ICICI Lombard, Self Employed Women's Association and Climate Resilience for All. 🚨😱📊Begging for Action: Extreme Heat Findings in 2024 Lancet Report📊😱🚨 The report launched today highlights a critical issue: from 2019 to 2023, people faced an average of 46 more days of health-threatening heat due to climate change, peaking at 50 days in 2023. Alarmingly, 31 countries reported over 100 extra days of extreme heat, with vulnerable populations experiencing a staggering 13.4 billion person-days of heatwaves. The implications are profound. Infants endured an average of 8.2 additional heatwave days, while adults over 65 faced 9.3 more. This excessive heat not only disrupts daily life but also leads to increased and harmful sleep loss—up to 6% more in 2023 alone. With climate change driving night-time temperatures up more quickly than daytime temps, the risk of health issues from poor sleep quality is on the rise. Lack of sleep slows down thinking and body reflexes, increases accidents on the job, and makes learning harder. The evidence is there, it’s time to elevate extreme heat as a global health priority. Addressing this issue is essential for safeguarding public health, livelihoods, and lives! 🔥💪 Learn more about our work to help women and vulnerable communities protect themselves from this most deadly climate impact at www.climateresilience.org

💥 💥 Congratulations and gratitude to the dedicated reporters who just completed Climate Resilience for All's Inaugural Extreme Heat Journalist Training! 🙌 🙌 Thank you to CRA's Extreme Heat Editor Laurie Goering, Chief Communications Officer Geraldine Henrich-Koenis, and human rights journalist Roli Srivastava for designing and delivering the dynamic, digital training and for curating such a dynamic group of South Asian participants! The course is designed to enhance reporting on the impacts of #extremeheat, provide new sources, science, and story angles, plus guidance on effective heat visuals. Each day focused on a specific aspect of heat with small groups and practical exercises. It also included local and global expert speakers in heat, health, gender, and other aspects, plus speakers from communities experiencing and providing solutions to extreme heat. Participants shared this feedback: ***************************************************************************** 👂 "I loved how the sessions were diverse and short, and panelists shared their experiences. One of the best trainings I've attended. I do feel very fulfilled about learning about reporting on extreme heat as a standalone beat." 👂 "The brainstorming sessions on possible story ideas were also interesting as we were looking at cross-border stories with similar implications." 👂 "I loved the breakout sessions, exchanging insights and reporting tips with everyone." ******************************************************************************* Stay tuned for information on future, free, regional training sessions! 🌊💔 As we witness the intensity and wide path of #HurricaneMilton that hammered Florida, it’s clear that heat is driving change at a scale we haven't fully grasped. This year, the world broke the hottest day record three days in a row (July 21, 22, 23), and it is emerging from its warmest northern hemisphere summer since records began, according to the European Union's climate change monitoring service on September 7, 2024. The exceptional heat increases the likelihood that 2024 will outrank 2023 as the planet’s warmest on record. Hurricane Helene and now Milton serve as stark reminders of how warmer oceans are powering more intense storms. The emotional and economic toll on communities is profound, with homes lost, families displaced, livelihoods already disrupted from Hurricane Helene, and a lingering anxiety about what the future holds. We MUST urgently confront climate change. Each rising degree of ocean temperature not only fuels storms but also heightens the risks of devastation that some people and communities will never recover from. While we continue to advocate, demonstrate, and innovate with our partners for tangible solutions and immediate policy change for vulnerable communities, we at Climate Resilience for All wish for safety and health for those in Milton's path and aftermath. ⛑ Emma Howard Boyd CBE Jeff Goodell Francis Bouchard Leslie Johnston, M.Sc. In a full-page letter published in Sunday's New York Times, Climate Resilience for All joined forces with women leaders from around the world calling on the U.S. to play its strongest role yet in global climate leadership. 🌎 More than 100 people are dead across the southern states of the U.S. from climate-fueled Hurricane Helene. Those lost lives, destruction, and long term trauma only make the need for action more urgent. CRA is proud to sign on to be part of a global community of leaders supporting impactful and bold U.S. leadership on climate change. The letter was coordinated and led by Bellwethers Group - we thank you. “As a connected network of women leading the world on finance, business, international development, science, and all aspects of the transition to a clean, resilient economy, all of us have pledged to work together on the climate and economic challenges facing our world.” “Since women have always been the first responders and rebuilders in crises, our leadership is already shaping the climate-positive economic transformation.” When Women are Climate Resilient, We Will All be Climate Resilient💥 Laurence Tubiana, Gina McCarthy, Emma Howard Boyd CBE, Mitzi Jonelle Tan, Meghna Chakkraborty, María Mendiluce, Mamta Borgoyary, Sharan Burrow, Jennifer Morris, Pat Mitchell, Jeannette Gurung, Dr Jan Corfee Morlot, @Isabel Hilton OBE, Peggy Liu, Rhian-Mari Thomas OBE, Tzeporah Berman, Valerie Rockefeller, Laura Clarke OBE, Sweta Chakraborty, PhD, Ellen Dorsey, Catherine Howarth OBE, Carey Bohjanen, Cameron Russell, Kathy Baughman McLeod, Mary McBryde, Geraldine Henrich-Koenis, Christina Stanton, Robyn James, Bianca Pitt
