This summer, I embarked on a new project with a single goal in mind: to demonstrate the power of collaboration. I reached out to two industry competitors and invited them to join me in creating a webinar aimed at helping medical laboratory leaders navigate the new CLIA changes. I believe that, with the vast amount of work in our field, collaboration is essential for the benefit of our profession. Yesterday’s webinar was a testament to this belief, as three women who could have been competitors instead became friends and united to support our community. 🌟 Building a Culture of Support and Collaboration in the Clinical Laboratory 🌟 In the intricate world of medical laboratory science, our roles extend far beyond just testing samples. We juggle the demands of accurate data generation, strict turnaround times, quality control, regulatory compliance, troubleshooting, and the ever-evolving landscape of technology. Amidst these challenges, workplace dynamics and relationships with colleagues and superiors are equally crucial. When a new administrative position is filled, whether it's a general supervisor, laboratory manager, or section supervisor, there’s inevitably a learning curve. Yet, instead of seeing this as a moment to assert superiority, it’s vital we embrace the opportunity to support and collaborate. Unfortunately, ageism can rear its head, with comments like, “You’re just a kid in a high position,” or “You’re too old to be good at your job.” Let’s remind ourselves: being a medical laboratory scientist doesn’t mean we should be lone wolves. Behind every great achievement is a great team. Our success within the four walls of the laboratory is directly linked to our collective efforts. Vicious competition and isolation won’t take us far. By opening our minds to support and collaboration, we pave the way for a successful clinical laboratory. This not only ensures the highest standards of patient safety but also propels our professional growth. Another CAP inspection done ✔️ I'm thrilled to share that University of Miami Hospital and Clinics Laboratories have just completed a successful CAP inspection. This is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence of our entire laboratory team. As laboratory leaders, we know that passing a CAP inspection is a significant accomplishment that requires meticulous preparation, attention to detail, and a relentless pursuit of quality. With each inspection, I've noticed our team getting better and better! Our continuous improvement mindset and commitment to learning from each experience have been key to our success. But what truly warms my heart is the camaraderie and collaboration that has developed among our team members. It was beautiful to see pathologists and laboratory scientists working together towards a common goal, sharing their expertise and supporting each other every step of the way. And I'm also grateful for the invaluable collaboration and support from our Nursing Team and hospital leadership - their partnership has been instrumental in our success.
