Join CLTC and the City and County of San Francisco's Offices of Digital Equity and Cybersecurity for the "CyberCAN: Cybersecurity for Cities and Nonprofits" report launch! 📅When: Tuesday, November 19 · 11:30am - 1:30pm (PST) 📍Where: San Francisco Law Library, San Francisco, CA Nonprofits provide critical and time-sensitive services to local residents and are fixtures of community support, yet are the second-most-targeted sector by cyber attacks — and are among the least prepared to defend themselves. This new forthcoming report aims to help government leaders in San Francisco and other cities more effectively support the digital security of local nonprofits. At this event, CLTC researchers Sarah Powazek and Shannon Pierson will present key findings from a first-of-its-kind regional study of 68 San Francisco-based nonprofits. The study identifies their cybersecurity challenges, preferences for support, available resources, and baseline cyber hygiene practices. The researchers will also present recommendations for how municipal governments can better support and strengthen the cybersecurity of local nonprofits. In a new open letter, CLTC strongly urges the next administration — regardless of political affiliation — to prioritize strengthening the #cybersecurity of under-resourced community organizations. 🏛️🌐 Many small, critical organizations — including small municipalities and rural school districts, as well as critical nonprofits like food banks, legal aid, and social services — often fall through the cracks of cybersecurity and lack the resources, training, and access to protect themselves from common cyber attacks. The open letter is co-signed by leaders in academia, civil society, industry, and philanthropy, who work day in and day out to patch the gaps in cybersecurity services and funding for these organizations and who stand at the ready to help deploy federal support to communities across the country to ensure local cyber resilience. 📄 Read the open letter: https://lnkd.in/gpt8Hiiu #CyberCivilDefense

Check out this recent episode of the CyberScoop #SafeMode podcast featuring Elijah Baucom, director of the University of California, Berkeley Cybersecurity Clinic at the UC Berkeley School of Information. In this episode, Baucom shares how the clinic partners students with nonprofits that are more susceptible to ideological-based attacks (e.g. human rights orgs, reproductive rights orgs) to provide them with pro-bono cybersecurity training and assistance.
