  • New Hire Orientation started Monday and ended today. Orientation began with warm welcomes from district leadership, who emphasized the district's commitment to fostering a supportive and collaborative work environment. The icebreaker activity was the game of “Never Have I Ever,” which sparked laughter from the group when a new hire shared a humorous story about being accidentally locked inside a mall after closing time.😆 🤭 Orientation aimed to provide new hires with essential tools and knowledge to kickstart their roles confidently and clearly. We are excited to welcome these individuals to the "U". Learn more and see more pictures 👉 https://buff.ly/3yPIs41

  • Our May Alumni Spotlight is here! 👨🎓 Thank you to Ashley Llorens for participating! CMHS Class of 1997 - from valedictorian to Corporate Vice President and Managing Director at Microsoft Research. Dr. Ashley Llorens graduated from Crete-Monee High School in 1997. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Park Forest until transferring to Crete-Monee Junior High School in the 7th grade. He was involved in Student Government, the Math Team, National Honor Society, and wrestling. He held the Student Body Officer position and worked extremely hard academically, graduating as Valedictorian of the class of 1997. After CMHS, Ashley attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. He continued his education, graduating in 2003 with a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and Digital Signal Processing. When Ashley returned to the area during summertime, he interned at Applied Systems in University Park and had a partial scholarship from the company. Ashley is Corporate Vice President and Managing Director at Microsoft Research (MSR) and drives strategy and execution for MSR engagement with the rest of Microsoft and the broader science and technology research community. Ashley is married to his wife, Amanda, whom he met at the University of Illinois. They have two children, a son, Noah, who is 14, and a daughter, Maya, who is 12. In 2023, Ashley completed his Doctorate in Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University. CRETE-MONEE WARRIORS ALUMNI & FRIENDS ASKED ASHLEY TO ANSWER A FEW QUESTIONS… What is your greatest professional/personal accomplishment? A recent accomplishment that I'm proud of is finishing my doctorate degree last spring. I started my doctorate to learn about something new, deep reinforcement learning, and stuck with it through a lot of twists and turns. I disappointed a few folks at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign when I left their Doctorate program early and went into the workplace in 2003. I'm gIad I did this because that led me into an area of research I was passionate about: artificial intelligence and machine learning. I went on to pursue a career in those areas and just recently completed my doctorate with AI as the focus. What advice would you give students at CMHS today? I would advise them to follow their curiosities. High school is a time when your horizons get expanded in so many ways, but you are also expected to be and act a certain way. Hold on to yourself and trust your intuition. If you find yourself headed down a path based on what other people expect you to do and that path doesn’t energize you, consider taking a step back. Look for something that gives you energy and will also enable you to earn a comfortable living. In my experience, the best opportunities are where these two things come together.
