Exciting News for Media Literacy and Journalism in Oregon! We are thrilled to announce that the Fund for Oregon Rural Journalism (FORJournalism) is making significant strides in teaching media literacy and empowering the next generation of journalists. Founded three years ago, FORJournalism is dedicated to sustaining rural newspapers and providing invaluable opportunities for young people, including high school students, to learn the essentials of journalism. Among its impactful initiatives, FORJournalism funds paid internships and embeds students in local newsrooms through the "Future Journalists of America" program. This hands-on experience is crucial for fostering a deep understanding of journalism and its vital role in our communities. A big thank you to Editor & Publisher (E&P) Magazine for highlighting this important work! Special kudos to Jody Lawrence-Turner for her continued progress in moving the vision forward and your determined passion for the future of journalism. ⏩ Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gbfetwvp

Overdoses in Oregon are on the rise – and on the North Coast, community leaders are struggling to keep up. Over the last couple of months, I’ve had the privilege of working on a story for The Astorian and EO Media Group looking at gaps in access to residential drug treatment. In the process, I’ve learned about the barriers people face in getting help, and the steps service providers, county officials and the Oregon Health Authority are taking to turn the page. It isn’t a fun topic – but it certainly is a timely one, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to write about this issue through a local lens. Check out my story to learn more. https://lnkd.in/g8XT_MVz
