🦇 CMT’s Environmental Team participated in a bat blitz survey this fall. Read on as our team paints a picture of their excursion with the endangered species – and just in time for spooky season! 🦇 How did the team get involved with this research? This work was done as part of a “bat blitz,” research that specifically seeks the help of biologists and volunteers to conduct bat surveys for massive data collection. Adults and children are invited to interact and engage in a variety of educational activities to learn about the bat’s delicate ecosystem. Guests can even visit the net sites to see the work happening in real time! What are you examining in each of the photos? The goal of this survey was to learn as much as possible about the local bat population. We documented each bat’s sex, approximate age, size, and weight to help understand the population’s health. How else does the Environmental Team work with bats? We conduct habitat assessments, emergence and acoustic surveys, record bat calls, and partner computer software with our bat vocalization expertise to identify which species are present in an area. When there is potential to affect endangered bats, we coordinate with project teams and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to develop measures to limit impact.
