A new forecast for the upcoming winter looks drastically different compared to last winter thanks in part to a budding La Niña. Last winter was shaped by El Niño and brought record warmth, especially in the northern half of the country, where several places struggled to get snow. Ask to take a nap in a mattress store. Challenge a stranger to a race. Rejection therapy is a popular trend on social media that encourages people to make odd requests of strangers that could get a "no" in response. The point is to face the initial fear that may arise in anticipation of a likely rejection or another negative reaction. It’s like a form of exposure therapy, in which you gradually expose yourself to a situation you fear, and it could be a good exercise for someone with lower levels of anxiety looking to feel a little more comfortable with rejection, said Dr. Taylor Wilmer, a board-certified licensed clinical psychologist based in Virginia who specializes in exposure therapy. But there are also precautions to keep in mind to make sure the interactions are done safely, added Wilmer, who is the director of clinical product strategy at InStride Health and a board member for the National Social Anxiety Center. Here’s what Wilmer and other experts have to say about this social media trend and how to ensure these challenges are beneficial and not harmful.

Here's an example of artificial intelligence being used for GOOD: U.S. Department of the Treasury says it recovered $1 billion worth of check fraud by using machine learning AI in fiscal 2024 alone. That represents nearly triple what it recovered using #AI the prior fiscal year. This type of AI excels at combing through oceans of data and detecting subtle patterns that humans might miss -- and doing it at lightning-fast speed. All of this shows how the federal government is balancing the risks and rewards of AI, everything from disrupting jobs and sapping power supplies to fighting financial crime.
