Coastal Community Foundation helps create communities rich equity, opportunity and well-being in Coastal SC.
About us
Coastal Community Foundation works to create communities rich in equity, well-being and opportunity through industry partnerships, thought leadership and advocacy, and by engaging donors who wish to be part of positive changes in coastal South Carolina. As we address policy changes and other large-scale needs to advance equity in our region, we create an environment where donors can amplify the impact of their generosity. We invest millions of dollars through grantmaking, impact investing and scholarships each year. We are known for understanding and acting upon the dynamic needs of the communities we serve, with examples including our disaster response efforts during and after major storms such as Hurricane Florence, and the creation of the Lowcountry Unity Fund in the wake of the Mother Emanuel AME Church massacre to support causes addressing systemic racism. With a mission to foster philanthropy for the lasting good of the community, Coastal Community Foundation manages more than $480 million in assets and awarded more than $30 million in grants in 2023.

As a way to memorialize his love for the Johns Island community, a group of friends created the Leroy Lewis Jr. Memorial Fund here at CCF. Lewis was passionate about uplifting youth, and did so throughout his lifetime working in public schools and the Upward Bound program. The fund will continue that legacy through its future grantmaking. Recently, volunteers completed service projects at Johns Island schools and hosted a seafood bash to commemorate what would have been Lewis' 75th Birthday. We look forward to seeing all the ways this fund will continue to preserve Leroy Lewis Jr.'s legacy. Learn more about creating a fund at CCF here: https://lnkd.in/enJD3rQH

35 years ago, Hurricane Hugo made landfall near Sullivan's Island. This was the first test of CCF's disaster response and recovery efforts. The Foundation managed all incoming donations and was responsible for granting out that money. We recently caught up with our first Executive Director, Ruth Heffron, who reflected on that time in our 50 year history.

We need your input to shape the future of the Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper county region. We have worked diligently with hundreds of people across the region to build a community-authored vision that will drive our next 25 years of partnerships and grantmaking. We have a draft ready to share and want to hear your input! It is crucial that this vision is shaped by the people who live in this 4-county region, so we hope you (and a friend!) can attend one of the upcoming Town Halls in October. TWO WEEKS LEFT to submit your application to the Rev. Pinckney College Readiness program. High school juniors in the program receive test prep, career and soft skills training, and guidance and mentorship through the college application process. College Readiness students then have the opportunity to apply for the Rev. Pinckney Scholars program. 90% of Rev. Pinckney Scholars complete college-- compared to 42% of Black students and 61% of all students nationally. This is in part thanks to the solid foundation built by the College Readiness program. APPLICATIONS CLOSE OCTOBER 4. Learn more and apply here: https://lnkd.in/gEu7syfA

Next week 📢 We are partnering with The Post and Courier to discuss an important issue on ballots in Beaufort and Jasper counties this November. Between two tax referendum measures, the counties are seeking to raise about $1.5 billion over the next 10-15 years for road improvements. Join us for a panel discussion to dive into what’s at stake and what you need to know to make an informed decision. This event is free to attend but registration is required. It is with mixed emotions that we share that Melissa Levesque will be stepping down from her role as Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer. Melissa has been a significant source of knowledge and expertise for the Foundation. Since joining CCF seven years ago, Melissa has helped to organize and build first-class Development & Stewardship and Marketing & Communications teams, select and integrate new donor supportive technology, and position the Foundation as the philanthropic partner of choice for so many in our 9-county region. While Melissa will be leaving the Foundation, we are happy to share that she will not be leaving our community and we may have the opportunity to cross paths with her professionally again. While we are not at liberty of sharing where she is going in this note, there will be a public announcement of her new role soon. Please join us in wishing Melissa luck as she makes the transition from philanthropy to the next chapter in her career.
