Over the past weekend, I had the honor of participating in the USSOCOM MetalOps: Smart City Hackathon. This hands-on challenge brought together IoT, RF, AI, and Cybersecurity professionals, along with students from prestigious institutions like MIT, Harvard, and Tufts, to form 2-5 member teams tasked with creating real-world solutions for the U.S. Special Operations Command. Teaming up with my roommate Eric Liu, a fellow USNA grad now also at MIT, we ventured out of our comfort zone to address the pressing issues faced by operators. After conducting market research and brainstorming, we decided to create a hybrid mesh network that leverages existing smart city infrastructure (primarily Wi-Fi) to provide secure, private communication for first responders during disasters when cellular coverage may be unavailable, and to offer a resilient, secure channel for the U.S. Special Operations Command. In just 24 hours, we successfully built the mesh network, integrated frequency hopping, encryption, and dynamic failover logic on ESP32s, delivering a minimal viable product (MVP) for a resilient and secure communication solution. While we didn't secure the top prize, I am immensely proud of our two-person team for creating a functional MVP in an unfamiliar domain, showcasing our ability to adapt and innovate in a field beyond our usual expertise. Congratulations to the winning team for their outstanding innovation, and a special shout-out to my Balkan friends Anton Njavro and Djordje Ivanovic for representing us well—truly amazing work! Thank you to the mentors and organizers at Code Metal for orchestrating this enriching event that fostered learning, collaboration, and innovation. The experience was truly invaluable, filled with opportunities to test our theoretical knowledge in practical, high-pressure situations.
