Every student in every neighborhood deserves a quality STEM education

About us

Our program fosters inclusive representation in the tech industry. We empower historically poor and underserved students, equipping them with the education, skills, and opportunities they need to access high-wage, high-growth careers. We provide STEM programs in K-12 that spark an interest in computer science. Students build confidence, have fun, and learn the introductory skills in technology they will need to access rewarding careers in technology. We partner with primary and secondary schools and neighborhoods to build educational and workforce pathways for vulnerable communities and families to experience innovation, equitable opportunities in technology, and economic mobility.

Did you know? Hispanic American workers remain underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) workforce. According to a Pew Research Center report, Hispanic adults make up 17% of total employment across all occupations in the U.S. but represent only 8% of all STEM workers. Similar patterns are seen in education, where the share of Hispanic American students earning STEM degrees is lower than their share of all degree recipients. This lack of diversity stems from inequities in educational support and opportunities. That’s where Code Rising comes in! Our partnership aims to bridge the opportunity gap in STEM and space exploration education among Hispanic youth. Last month, Amanda Meri, MPA, RN, FDN-P our Interim Executive Director, had the incredible opportunity to attend the Space4ALL Initiative at the White House with Code Rising’s CEO, Michelle J. M. This national campaign promotes inclusion and career opportunities in the space industry workforce, extending the reach of space STEM education to students and families, particularly those in underrepresented communities. Want to join us in impacting the future of STEM education in our community? Your one-time gift or recurring monthly donation to Casa Chirilagua helps provide support, resources, and life-changing opportunities for students and their families. Together, we are not just bridging the opportunity gap; we are launching the next generation of innovators and leaders. Your support makes a world of difference. I'm so inspired by this local effort, that is drawing together some national partners, and will have global impacts. This three-week camp starts next week and they are still raising money to offset their costs. Code Rising is doing great work. Read below and reach out to Michelle J. M. if you're able to support their 2024 Summer Space Camp! (and hats off to Amazon for their support as well!)

It was such an honor to participate in this morning’s Space4ALL Outreach and Engagement Forum at The White House. Code Rising is proud to support the Vice President’s Space4ALL Initiative — a national Space STEM awareness campaign promoting inclusion and career opportunities in the space ecosystem. Along with strengthening America’s standing around the world, we believe it will also create the next generation of students that could: 🌙 Advance our scientific understanding and knowledge on the moon 🛰 Monitor the James Webb Space Telescope or the landing of a rover on Mars 🌎 Produce innovative solutions for tackling the climate crisis 🤝 Promote safe, sustainable, and peaceful space collaboration …just to name a few things! Code Rising is excited to continue our commitment with our community to developing solutions to today’s Space STEM education and workforce challenges. That’s why we’re partnering with Casa Chirilagua to launch the first-ever Space STEM Camp for students in Chirilagua — the Alexandria neighborhood that’s home to a large Central American immigrant population — to bridge the opportunity gap in STEM and space exploration education by empowering Alexandria’s Latino youth. Many thanks to Quincy Kissiedu-Brown and the National Space Council for the invitation to join today’s important conversation for Space4ALL! I can’t wait to see how this transformative initiative impacts our world for generations to come. It was wonderful to see so many old friends, Obama 44 colleagues, partners, and make new friends today. My sincere thanks to Casa Chirilagua’s outstanding Executive Director, Amanda Meri, MPA, RN, FDN-P and our dedicated Code Rising Board Member, David Hudson of Aluta Strategies, for joining me for todays inspiring discussion! #space4all #stem #stemed #whitehouse #nationalspacecouncil #space

Just wrapped an incredible week of collaboration at #SXSWEDU in Austin, TX! Our CEO and Board Members were thrilled to present, connect, and learn alongside a dynamic community of change-makers, educators, nonprofits, city and community leaders in STEM. We're especially grateful for the opportunity to host a panel on "Strengthening STEM Ecosystems in Underestimated Cities." The session, featuring Tyrance Billingsley II, Pamela O. Gilchrist, Ph.D., our CEO Michelle J. M., and our Board Member Miles Sebesta, fostered a space for inspiring discussion. The audience was amazing. We enjoyed the great questions, sharing strategies, and offering practical tips to strengthen STEM education and ecosystem growth. Here's to another year at SXSW EDU! We'll see you next year!

On August 31, 2023, Governor Newsom released the Executive Order “Freedom to Succeed” which “directs state leaders in education, workforce development, and economic development to develop a Master Plan on Career Education which will guide the state in its efforts to strengthen career pathways, prioritize hands-on learning and real-life skills, and advance universal access and affordability for all Californians through streamlined collaboration and partnership across government and the private sector.” We were proud to join our partners in submitting these principles and policy recommendations that address the issues identified in the Executive Order. Our recommendations describe how embedding modern college-connected youth apprenticeship as part of a continuum of work-based learning in California will help improve educational equity while helping California maintain its edge as an innovation economy. Thank you to the following partners for your leadership in advancing youth apprenticeships: California Workforce Association (Official), CareerWise Recruitment, Southern California Apprenticeship Network (SCAN), Northern California Apprentice Network (NCAN), and Launch Network.
