It's Family Engagement Friday, and we're highlighting Durango School District 9-R's Escuela para Padres monthly gatherings for Spanish-speaking families. These events are designed to help families learn about school resources and programs and share ways that families can be involved in their child's learning. Session topics are selected based on feedback from parents and families with a goal of empowering them to be proactive partner in their child's school experience.

This week's Summer Reading Spotlight is on the High Plains Library District where summer reading includes activities, events, and even a pop-up library! The High Plains pop-up library team brought summer reading to community events including the Migrant Children’s Festival and Greeley Pride. To date, the team has connected with more than 500 people to issue library cards, waive fines, check out books, and sign people up for the summer reading program. Jeffco Public Schools - Colorado will start the 2024-25 school year with new programs designed to meet the needs of newcomer students and their families. The district, which welcomed an estimated 600 newcomers last year and more are expected, will have new curriculum, family ambassadors and a welcome center bus for newcomer families. Jeffco is also adding newcomer programs to four high schools: Jefferson Jr./Sr. High School, Alameda International, Lakewood High School, and Green Mountain High School. Thanks to funding from CDE's Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) grant program and the support of Fowler voters in a bond campaign, students and teachers in Fowler School District R-4J started their second semester in a brand new building! The facilitiy improvements included a new 66,010 square foot junior/senior high school added to the existing elementary school campus to create a comprehensive and secure PK-12 campus. For Teacher Tuesday, we're celebrating Cherry Creek School District's Carla Sullivan! Carla is a family and consumer sciences teacher at Smoky Hill High School and has been teaching for 16 years. Carla loves seeing students grow and develop a love for culinary arts. She says: “I am motivated by my passions. I get to teach classes such as culinary arts, fashion design, child development and relationships. These topics are not just career focused but everyday life skills, such as problem solving, critical thinking and teamwork.” Carla is the Bylaws Chair of Colorado Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, the Career and Technical Education Department Coordinator at her school, and a Prostart Teacher for the National Restaurant Association. When she isn't in the classroom, Carla is a triathlete and enjoys traveling, hiking, and spending time with her family.

DOLORES SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. RE-4A student Bridger Beyhan hiked the Colorado Trail during summer break! To reach his goal of finishing the trail in 21 days, Bridger kept up a 23-mile-a-day pace on the 567-mile hike from Denver to Durango. Bridger, who will be a junior at Dolores High School, told the Durango Herald: “I realized how much more I could do than what I initially thought.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gWSzeQiZ
