October is National Principal Month, and we're celebrating the school leaders who serve and support Colorado educators, students, and families. Ann Alfonso is the principal of Bethke Elementary School in the Poudre School District. She says the most rewarding part of being a principal is watching children learn how to read, solve problems, and express themselves through writing and the arts. She told us that “The best part of my day is when a student comes to my office to read to me!” Ann joined the school when it opened in 2008 and has loved watching it grow. “This special school has become everything I hoped and planned for it to be -- a welcoming, positive, collaborative professional learning community that honors all learners.” She also enjoys working with educators and helping them grow in their craft. “I love when former students write to me or come back and share how our school made a difference in their lives.” In her free time, Ann loves exploring the outdoors outdoors with her son and husband.

It's Teacher Tuesday and National Hispanic Heritage Month, so we are highlighting Spanish teacher Cynthia Mercado from Global Village Academy North Charter School. Cynthia has been a teacher for two years and loves that her role makes a positive impact on students “whether it's through helping them appreciate a new culture and language or simply giving them the support and tools in their academic journey.” She is motivated to teach Spanish because “I want to inspire my students through my example that you can learn a second language created through effort and self-confidence.” When she isn't teaching, Cynthia loves to travel with her family. She says “learning about other cultures has taught me how beautiful each country has to offer the world.”

To kick off National Principals Appreciation Month, we are highlighting Mountain Vista Community School School Principal Angela Valdez of Harrison School District 2. Dr. Valdez has been at Mountain Vista since 2018 and was named the Colorado Elementary School Principal of the Year by the Colorado Association of School Executives. She also serves as secretary for the Board of the Latina Equity Foundation and is a participant in the Colorado Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents' 4 Corners Academy. "To sum up why I am a principal, the one word that comes to mind is IMPACT," she said. With more than 20 years of experience in public education, Dr. Valdez has been an elementary classroom bilingual teacher and assistant principal. She is a proud D2 graduate and says: " I have the privilege of now walking the same hallways and buildings that students walk. I love positively impacting the trajectory of students and ensuring that every student who walks through the doors of Mountain Vista Community School feels seen, heard, and valued." When not at school, she spends time with her husband Troy and their four children. She loves to read, crochet and play Bingo.
