Gillvray Health Ltd has officially opened Cambridge’s first Lifestyle Medicine Clinic to help individuals, corporations and clinicians improve health and wellbeing and reduce levels of preventable disease cases. A member of the Cambridge Judge Business School School Accelerator Programme, Gillvray Health plans to launch similar clinics elsewhere in the UK and expand worldwide over time. Founded by CEO Dr Claire Gillvray (Lifestyle Medicine Lead for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT) – with expertise in psychiatry, general practice, and sports medicine) and Lucy Hibben (breath coach, meditation teacher and senior yoga instructor), Gillvray Health combines traditional medicine with holistic care. Dr Gillvray said: “Lifestyle Medicine is the future of healthcare. With rising numbers of people struggling with chronic disease, obesity and mental health problems, we know that we need to look beyond the use of medications and interventions and think about how we can help individuals, groups and whole populations to change their behaviours safely and with support, ensuring they are looking to the best quality research.” Chief Operating Officer, Lucy Hibben, added: “Gillvray Health aims to educate and empower people to use their every-day behaviours to improve their physical and mental wellbeing. “The clinic will help individuals, corporations and clinicians to think about the six pillars of lifestyle medicine – nutrition, movement, sleep, connection, stress management and avoidance of negative behaviours – with the purpose of improving health and functioning.”

#redjanuary - we have reached the end of January but hopefully not the end of the journey. This is just the start. Can you Reflect Every Day in January about what worked and what didn’t? What you can take and make sustainable? For me this January threw me a massive curve ball with my husband being hit by a car when out running and we have spent a lot of the last few weeks in hospital. When I reflect on my response I am so grateful that I had the ability to get out and run and move with friends. My long run / my Zwift race / my swim session never happened as planned but the 5km along the river with @neryscopping and the run from work yesterday with @barkerbarretttrish was what my head needed to process my side of the trauma. Thank you to everyone that has supported my family and I. The dinners, the brownies, the cards and the visits. Together we are definitely stronger and Sometimes we just need to shift our mindset of movement from physical to mental to find the joy in the moment and really see its benefit! What have you taken from this month? #lifestylemedicine

#redjanuary Today I ran with my eldest riding her bike beside me… I’d love to say she was enjoying it but my hunt for a R was met with a Really Grumpy!! But I’m going to go with my R - Relationships Every Day… because running or moving with friends, patients, clients, colleagues, family helps with motivation, accountability and building sustained behaviours. Can you make some of your movement be with others?? #lifestyiemedicine

#redjanuary Day 20 Having to make choices and decisions can be a real barrier to action. So if you are someone who knows they struggle with motivation it can be really helpful to build Routines or Rituals Every Day in January - piggy backing activities to things that happen already. Like boiling the kettle, brushing your teeth, commuting to work. If we can make movement something that automatically happens without us needing to decide or think about it, then it really helps on those low motivation days. Are you a routine person? #lifestylemedicine

#redjanuary Day 16 Reminder to day to Recover in January. Recovery time is particularly important if we are new to activity or if we suffer from chronic pain or fatigue. The recovery can be active which means some gentle movement that doesn’t raise our heart beat but stretches out our muscles. That might mean some yoga or a swim or just some simple stretching. I’ve had a long work day doing awesome things with Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT) - meeting lots of different people and thinking about how we can bring #lifestylemedicine into our care pathways. Thank you to Trish Barker-Barrett for all the intros!!

#redjanuary Day 15 and it’s a cold one! Worth wRapping up Every Day in Jan! Pull on some layers, hats and gloves and actually when you do move you will find yourself warmer for the rest of the day as you will have kick started your metabolism and boosted your circulation. I’m going on a social run a little later. What about you?? #lifestylemedicine

#redjanuary day 13 I’m often asked about how to find movement that we enjoy. Lots of us have had bad experiences as kids of horrible PE teachers.. “you sound like an elephant claire…. You haven’t tried if you haven’t thrown up claire… seriously!!!” But I do encourage you to think about what you did enjoy before barriers came down and try Returning to it Every Day in January. So much of this business of building sustainable behaviours that include movement has to be to do with finding the joy. If we don’t find we’ve enjoyed it by the end then it’s hard to find the motivation to start. I’d love to hear your views on this? Has anyone else returned to a sport or hobby as an adult and found the joy again?? #lifestylemedicine
