ICYMI: The Interagency Ocean Observation Committee (IOOC) has officially released its inaugural Strategic Plan (2024-2029). 🌊 This plan marks a significant milestone in advancing ocean knowledge, stewardship, and societal benefit by addressing the challenges posed by evolving ocean observing technology, environmental changes, and new economic opportunities. UCAR's Center for Ocean Leadership was closely involved in developing this strategy in its management of the IOOC office. Particular kudos to Kruti Desai, for her masterful coordination aligning the priorities of the many federal agencies that support ocean observing. 🌊 The NOSB is recruiting individuals for our Technical Advisory Panels (TAPs) for the 2024-2025 competition year, and we want YOU! 🔍 We’re seeking individuals with ocean sciences knowledge or expertise in the fields of Physical Oceanography, Chemistry, Biology, Geology, Geography, Marine Policy, Technology, and the Social Sciences to help review and refine the NOSB competition questions. Last week, National Ocean Sciences Bowl staff Melissa Brodeur and Nicole Palma attended the National Marine Educators Association conference in Boston, MA. Every NMEA conference provides an opportunity to connect with various members of our NOSB community (teachers, alumni, regional coordinators, volunteers, and sponsors) as well as forge new connections, friendships, and partnerships with others dedicated to ocean science, literacy, and education. It's an amazing few days of learning, sharing, networking, and ... let's be honest ... geeking out about the amazing ocean and its inhabitants. While attending, NOSB staff presented a poster entitled 'Assessing Community Needs to Reimagine the National Ocean Sciences Bowl.' As the NOSB undergoes a full programmatic needs assessment through 2025, we requested input from all attendees to help inform improvement of the NOSB and our understanding of what underrepresented students, teachers, and communities need to better engage in after school STEM education. We appreciate all those that stopped by the poster to learn more about the NOSB and completed our survey. The Center for Ocean Leadership Director and representatives of four affiliate institutions from academic, non-profit, and commercial sectors visited Capitol Hill on July 31st 2024. We met with staffers from the Senate and House to communicate shared community priorities, especially regarding the ocean observing system and ocean workforce development. We were pleased with the level of interest and support for programs such as the National Ocean Sciences Bowl and the Integrated Ocean Observing System.

The Gulf of Mexico Coastal Ocean Observing System (GCOOS), a COL affiliate, is looking for an Associate Director of Operations to help manage and expand the GCOOS Regional Association. For more information and to apply, see https://lnkd.in/eu8kBVi9
