About us
The Collective for Youth Empowerment in STEM & Society (CYESS) – a new initiative of the Afterschool Alliance – aims to elevate youth voices in conversations about solutions to societal challenges. Because many of today’s societal challenges have solutions rooted in science, all young people need access to both STEM learning and civic engagement to turn that learning into action. CYESS will leverage the afterschool field’s expertise in providing nurturing, supportive environments for young people, engaging STEM experiences, and opportunities for community engagement to ensure all young people have opportunities to make their voices heard and improve their communities through STEM.

We are excited about our Collective for Youth Empowerment in STEM & Society (CYESS) approach that starts with the needs of communities and young people and shows how STEM can be a useful tool for civic engagement and action. Check out our Theory of Change and join us in this effort! Massive thanks to Public Profit for their thoughtful approach in helping us develop this and to the CYESS Community of Practice for engaging in the process at every step. #STEM #civicengagement #civicaction #youthempowerment
Young people are excited about the future and have really smart ideas for solving the challenges they see in the world today. Some have the tools and opportunities to make a difference but most do not. And too often, young people are left out of conversations that impact their lives and shape the future. We are working to change that! Our Theory of Change outlines how we plan to do this: https://lnkd.in/eX36pvtC

Young people have important things to say. #LightsOnAfterschool is the perfect time to pass the microphone! See our ideas for highlighting #YouthVoice on October 24: 💡 If you’re hosting an open house, allow students to give tours of the program 💡 If you’re hosting a rally, give young people an opportunity to speak publicly to the community about their views on afterschool and the impact of their program 💡 If you’re hosting an art day, have youth decorate light bulbs to mail to your local elected officials and share why afterschool is important to them. 💡 If you’re hosting a letter-writing day, work with the local newspaper to have them publish op-eds by young people that focus on kids' views of afterschool https://lnkd.in/eb3y2qJD
