The College of Social Science at Michigan State University (MSU) is a community of scholars committed to creating, disseminating, and applying knowledge in the social, behavioral and economic sciences. Faculty engage in both disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaborative research to gain in-depth answers to real world problems on local, national, and international levels. Students prepare to become leaders through challenging coursework and enriching practical experiences. The college is the largest and among the most diverse at MSU; more than 6,300 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled in its 13 major disciplines. Nearly 400 tenured and tenure-stream faculty provide instructional, research, and outreach services within its eight departments, three schools, and seven centers and institutes.

Briana Coleman, PhD, graduated with a psychology degree from Michigan State University in 2015. During her time at MSU, Briana was involved with the Adolescent Diversion Program (ADP) which fueled her to help change the lives of youth heading towards the juvenile justice system. “ADP helped me to learn more about the things that I was interested in. I think as a psychology undergraduate student, I just knew I wanted to work with youth. But ADP helped me understand what that really meant to work with youth in the community, to see some of the things they were really facing. Internship at Roblox ✔ Meet Joshua Pearman, M.S., a PhD student in the Organization Psychology research area. Over the summer, Josh interned with Roblox as a People Science Intern. “I was a People Science Intern at Roblox primarily working on assessment development. My role involved developing a new situational judgment test, which is sort of like a job relevant “What would you do about this problem?” question. MSU PLS is pleased to coordinate with the Democracy at a Crossroads event on Wednesday, October 16, at 4:30 p.m. at the Pasant Theatre, Wharton Center for Performing Arts with MSU PLS alum Tim Alberta. Michigan Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II will join Outlier Media’s Sarah Alvarez for a discussion on tackling voter apathy through civic education and building trust in democracy. They’ll explore deeper issues and the role of government, community organizations, and residents in enacting real change. Then, The Atlantic’s Alberta, Elaine Godfrey, and Jemele Hill, along with Evan Smith, will discuss Michigan’s most pressing issues, including criminal-justice reform, housing, higher education, and the role of journalism.
