Vision: We envision a future where Black and Latinx technologists are at the forefront of innovation. ColorStack at The University of Florida exists to address the immense lack of diverse students who identify as Black, Latinx, or Native American in the computer science (CS) major at The University of Florida. Today, Black employees make up 13% of the workforce but only 4% of tech workers. While Hispanic workers make up 17% of the workforce, they hold just 8% of STEM jobs. The biggest tech companies report a similar gap. ColorStack aims to address this alarming proportion that is not only present in the computing industry but also at the University of Florida, as well as, universities and colleges across the country by doing the following - Creating a safe space for students of color pursuing computer science to pursue their academic and professional aspirations in the field of computing. - Ensuring each student is equipped with the resources and overall environment necessary to persist through the computer science major. - Leveraging ColorStack’s national relationships with industry professionals and recruiting teams to best position our students for success in finding a career for themselves in the technological industry. We strive to increase the overall entrance, retention, and success of Black, LatinX, and Native American college students pursuing computer science at The University of Florida.

We're midway through the NVIDIA x ColorStack UF: Fundamentals of Deep Learning Program! Dedicated members have been immersing themselves in computer vision and natural language processing under the expert guidance of NVIDIA certified instructor and UF Research Computing Training Team Lead Matt Gitzendanner. We are grateful for the University of Florida‘s NVIDIA ambassadorship, making this $100,000+ program completely free for all participants. Our journey started off strong, with an inspiring speech from ColorStack UF Faculty Advisor Dr. Sanethia Thomas, an insightful presentation from Cherish Burks on behalf of NVIDIA University Recruiting, and an intensive 1-hour Pandas crash course facilitated by student-instructors Matthew Peck & Dylan Zhuang. Looking ahead, we're brimming with excitement as participants will soon be training deep learning models from scratch. They'll be working on innovative projects like creating an automatic doggy door and developing a Computer Vision model to differentiate between fresh and rotten fruit. As we anticipate their progress, we're equally excited about the relationships being built in this inclusive learning environment we have created. Upon successful completion, all our participants will receive the NVIDIA DLI: Fundamentals of Deep Learning certificate, upon successful completion of the assessment, as recognition of their subject matter competency and support professional career growth. The cherry on top? This entire program is taking place in the brand new Malachowsky Hall, NVIDIA Auditorium! We are proud to say ColorStack UF is literally and figuratively opening doors for ColorStack fam members 🥳 #DeepLearning #AI #NVIDIA #ColorStackUF #computerscience

Former SWE Intern @ UKG | Math and CS student @ University of Florida

A couple weeks ago, my internship with UKG came to a satisfying end. It was certainly filled with more than I expected but was awesome nonetheless. First of all, I wanted to say thank you to Tiffany King for being such a kind and reliable intern program manager. Thank you to Wes Day for an amazing first 6 weeks, and thank you to Andres B. for taking me in and helping me to learn so much about your team! Also, I could not have learned as much as I did without some advice from some of the really gifted engineers on my team, so I want to give a special thank you to to Ibis Verson and Michael Gaillard for being such great teachers to me. During this 12 week period, I became familiar with popular tools such as MongoDB, Postman, SpringBoot, and Ansible. I was able to use these tools to work with an expansive database and learned a lot about how to work with a team, regularly participating in daily stand ups and recording demos of features that I worked on. Overall, it was an amazing summer and I really grew a lot over the course of it. It was a bittersweet goodbye to my fellow Ukrewers, but I am sure we are all excited for the future! (P.S. yes that’s me in the front 😂)

Product Management Intern @ NBCUniversal Peacock | Prev @ Citi | Information Systems Major at UF | Certified ScrumMaster

This summer was full of learning experiences, from classes to internships. A standout moment for me was completing the CodePath Technical Interview Prep Course. Those 10 weeks demanded huge discipline as I tackled complex algorithmic problems to pass the course. While some may question the relevance of these skills in product management, my experience has shown that staying up-to-date with today’s technical acumen is vital for the cross functional communications for product managers. Thank you CodePath for pushing me to grow!

SWE Intern @ Google, Prev @ EA | CS @ UF | HSF Scholar | ColorStack

Hi All! 🙂 A few weeks ago, I wrapped up my internship at Electronic Arts (EA)’s EA SPORTS studio, and I’m excited to share a recap of my experience. 🎮 It feels like just yesterday that I had the opportunity to visit EA Headquarters at Redwood Shores for the Intern Early Access event, yet three months have flown by, immersing me in the world of game development. One of the highlights of my internship was traveling to the Orlando studio in late June, where I met most of my team—the Madden and College Football Infrastructure team—in person. This invaluable experience coincided with visits from team members in Madrid and South Florida, allowing us to engage in insightful brainstorming, planning, and recap meetings. They say a team can make or break your experience in the workforce, and I couldn’t have asked for a better team to guide me through my first professional experience in software engineering. During my internship, I made it a priority to grow my network by connecting with professionals across various teams at EA, including American Football, other Sports, Respawn, and PopCap. I also took full advantage of EA’s learning resources, which led me to earn a certification in AWS’s S3 tool. In addition to my regular tasks with the team, I successfully delivered all the planned features for my intern project—a web application named 'Dungeon Keeper' aimed at streamlining the developer kit ownership process for developers in the studio—along with some stretch features. I’m especially proud of this project and had the opportunity to showcase it at our intern fair! 🎉 A big thank you to the Next Gen Talent team—Michelle Gonzalez, M.B.A., SHRM-CP, Jake Rodriguez, Adetola Egbeleye, Stephanie Thompson, Raghib Tyler, and Michael Lee—who supported me throughout this journey.  And a special shoutout to some of the amazing interns I connected with, including Lenaoria Guerin, Rebeca Hefferan, Nicole Franco, Jessica Flores, Valerio Bianco, Tyra Foster, Ava Noelle Johnson, Niya Traynham, Carlos Pinto Jimenez, Ahad Ali, and Amish Gupta. You all rock, and I can’t wait to see what you accomplish in the future! 🚀 I’m deeply thankful for this experience and look forward to staying in touch with everyone I met here moving forward! #EA #EASports #Madden #CollegeFootball25 #SummerInternship #SWE

Honors CS @ The University of Florida | SWE Intern @ Microsoft '24 | Undergraduate Researcher

Last Friday marked the end of my Software Engineering Internship at Microsoft, and today, I’m stepping into the first day of my fall semester at the University of Florida. As I look ahead, I can't help but reflect on the amazing journey these last three months have been. This summer, I had the privilege of working on Microsoft’s AI Platform team, specifically with the Online Meetings Transcription Services team—a group whose impact became apparent to me very quickly. Working at a company I’ve admired since childhood was a dream come true, and being able to contribute hands-on to a project that’s making a significant difference was beyond rewarding. The challenges I faced pushed me to grow, and after 12 weeks, I’m incredibly proud of the work I’ve accomplished. I’ve learned more in these three months than I ever imagined, thanks to the guidance and support from some of the smartest and most ambitious people I’ve ever met. A huge thank you to my mentor, Amy Shah, my manager, Sayan Pathak, and the entire team who helped me along the way—Haohui Liu, Harini Kesavamoorthy, Zoltan Romocsa, Nathan Wohlgemuth, Chris Basoglu, Sourish Chatterjee, Brook Tamir, Michael Sinz, Abdulaziz Mohammed, and and many others. Without them, I would not be where I am today. And an extra special thank you to the coffee club for keeping me fueled! Thank you, Microsoft, for this unforgettable experience. I’m excited to take everything I’ve learned into the future. #Microsoft #Internship #SoftwareEngineer
