This summer I had the joy of working as an Education and Outreach Intern for Columbia Land Conservancy, diving into the world of conservation and communications. From exploring the beautiful Columbia County landscape to catching frogs with local libraries, every moment has been a new adventure. One of the highlights was witnessing the banding of baby kestrels, seeing these amazing birds up close and knowing they’ll be tracked over time was truly special. Working with incredible mentors at CLC has been an amazing opportunity for my growth in the communications field. I got hands-on experience managing social media and promoting events, like ‘Floating Friday.’ This event, where we pulled invasive water chestnuts from the lake, was a perfect example of how community spirit and fun can come together to support a great cause. Experiencing and promoting events like this truly highlights the impact of bringing people together for something meaningful, a mission near and dear to CLC. One of the most meaningful parts of this internship was delving into an ethnoecology report of the lands managed by CLC. It was a meaningful experience to explore indigenous voices and perspectives that have historically been underrepresented in conservation conversations. This work has deepened my understanding of the knowledge that contributes to land stewardship. I’m incredibly grateful to the team at Columbia Land Conservancy for their support and mentorship. This summer has been more than just an internship, it’s been a journey of learning, connecting with nature, and discovering the impact of community efforts. Thank you to everyone who made this experience so memorable. I’m excited to carry these lessons with me into the future, as well as the friends I made along the way!

      +1
  • Yesterday was an incredibly special day! CLC staff joined Berkshire Bird Observatory at Ooms to band the last fledgling Kestrels of the season. Amazingly, these birds are about as large as they will grow, with the average Kestrel topping out at nine to eleven inches tall. The colored bands you see will let us know in the future if these birds come back to breed at Ooms. We hope to see them again, but next time as parents! [All banding, marking, and sampling is conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the USGS BBL.] #ColumbiaCounty #GetOutside
