About us

Columbus Museum of Art’s mission is to create great experiences with great art for everyone. Whether we are presenting an exhibition, designing an art-making activity, or giving visitors directions, we are guided by a vision to connect people and art. CMA nurtures that connection and removes barriers between our community and our collection. CMA’s galleries are filled with works that manifest creativity. Our collection includes outstanding late nineteenth and early twentieth-century American and European modern works of art. We house the world’s largest collections of works by beloved local artists Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson, Elijah Pierce, and George Bellows; and acclaimed collections such as The Photo League and the Philip and Suzanne Schiller Collection of American Social Commentary Art. A commitment to contemporary art, folk art, glass, and photography continues the Museum’s dedication to showcasing art of our time. CMA is where creativity and the daily life of our community intersect and thrive, as we champion new and different ways of thinking and doing. We celebrate the creative process and provide opportunities for people to cultivate and discover the value of creativity in their own lives.

Mark your calendars for January 25 and get ready for a night of unforgettable fashion, unexpected experiences, and wonder. The evening will feature a range of performances, art, and live music that capture the spirit of creativity at the museum. Engaging our youngest minds is so purposeful and transformative for audiences and staff. Through our Baby & Me tour at Columbus Museum of Art, I observe early developmental skills, caregiver connections, and staff's own appreciation for discovery and understanding--particularly profound through the eyes of infants and toddlers. https://lnkd.in/gHyY5-iV

Big news! Two incredible artists featured at CMA have just been named 2024 MacArthur Foundation ‘genius grant’ recipients: Wendy Red Star and Ebony G. Patterson! Ebony G. Patterson is featured in our current exhibition, "Fragments of Epic Memory," with her powerful piece “…three kings weep…” The exhibition explores the Caribbean and its diaspora through historical and contemporary art. Wendy Red Star, an Apsáalooke (Crow) artist, was celebrated in our 2023 exhibition "Wendy Red Star: A Scratch on the Earth," which explored Crow history, colonization, and Indigenous feminism through photography, textiles, and mixed media. We are also proud to have acquired her piece "Let Them Have Their Voice" as part of our permanent collection. We are beyond proud of these artists' achievements and honored to have showcased their groundbreaking work. MacArthur Foundation #MACFellow #EbonyGPatterson #WendyRedStar Ebony G. Visiting for #FreeSundays? Be sure to stop by Gallery 10 and spend a moment with this work by François Boucher, who was #BornThisDay in 1703. Admitted to the French royal academy at the age of thirty-one, François Boucher became one of its most influential members during his lifetime. Breaking with the hierarchy of academic genres, which privileged large-scale paintings depicting historical, religious, or mythological events, Boucher instead favored pastoral scenes—idealized landscapes inhabited by shepherds, shepherdesses, nymphs, and fauns—that celebrated the pursuit of sensual pleasure and courtship. This painting once hung over a door, where it would have been placed within a decorative frame or molding. Boucher may have painted this work for a French royal palace owned by Madame de Pompadour, mistress of France’s King Louis XV. The picture’s subject is drawn from the Roman poet Ovid. It shows the Roman god of gardens, Vertumnus, disguised as an older woman in a ploy to gain the confidence of the nymph Pomona, whom he wished to court. François Boucher, Earth: Vertumnus and Pomona, 1749. Oil on canvas. Museum Purchase: Derby Fund. In honor of Elizabeth M. Ross and in recognition of her dedication and service to the Columbus Museum of Art
