Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, we sat down with Issac Ortiz, Team Lead at our Buena, New Jersey site, who has played an integral part on the production floor at Comar for nearly 5 years. 💬 Tell us a little about yourself and your professional background. 🗨️ I’ve worked in production-based facilities for half of my life. Fresh out of high school, I started at Johnson & Johnson in the medical field and knew I wanted to stay in that space for the stability and longevity of my career as I’ve always wanted a family. Thankfully, so did my high school sweetheart, my wife of 25 years, as we’ve been blessed with our first grandson. When I was at J&J, I was up in north Jersey, close to New York in all the hustle and bustle. My wife and I were looking for some peace and quiet, somewhere calmer and that’s what brought me here to Comar. It’s amazing what I have the opportunity to do here, I call myself “the gopher”, I just go-for whatever needs to be done. 💬 What are some things you honor from your Hispanic roots in your everyday life at work? 🗨️I grew up in a generation where grandparents took a strong stance in their grandchildren’s upbringing. My roots are very grounded in tradition because of them. My mother and father were born in Puerto Rico, migrated here, and their culture came with them and stuck with me. The food, the music, the history of our heritage stays with me. Growing up, I was in the fields picking coffee, getting plantains, seeing it grow from outside to inside at the kitchen table. My grandparents lived like that, so I lived like that, they made me apart of that and it’s a big part of what I hold as far as my heritage. 💬 Who has been your biggest source of inspiration? 🗨️My parents. They came from nothing in Puerto Rico, neither one went to school, but they came here, learned the language and got their GEDs. My dad found a steady job with the board of education in Franklin for 32 years until he was ready to retire. My mom’s profession was children assistance. This is where my roots stemmed from and why I knew, even in high school, I wanted longevity with a job for my family. I’m thankful my wife shared the same values, and we were able to start our family young, my son’s 25 now. 💬 How can we embrace and support other cultures within our work community? 🗨️Wow what a beautiful question, I would say the love of diversity. 💬 What is a dish from your culture you can’t live without? 🗨️Oh, my goodness, that’s hard. If I had to say just one, I’d pick pasteles, because of my grandparents. Think of it like a Puerto Rican hot pocket made of plantains. 💬 Do you have any advice you could share with others in a similar role, from a similar background? 🗨️I have kept this with me since my elementary school math teacher said it, I’ll never forget this – be good or be best, never let it rest until your good gets better and your better gets best. www.comar.com

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we had the pleasure of interviewing Herendida Galindo, SHRM-CP Galindo, HR Manager at Rancho Cucamonga and La Mirada facilities, to gain insights into her cultural and career journey. Tell us about your career journey. I’ve accumulated over 18 years of Human Resources experience in the manufacturing industry, with the past 8 years at Comar. I started as an HR Business Partner in 2016, and just over three years later, here I am as the HR Manager in sunny California. What are some things you honor from your Hispanic roots in your everyday work life? I’m incredibly proud to be a first-generation Mexican American. It has shaped who I am. Our culture is rich, vibrant, festive, and lively—so full of energy, and I carry that with me every day. Our culture emphasizes community through supporting one another with acts of service, and that sense of togetherness translates into teamwork at Comar. I approach all of my relationships at Comar in this way, always finding ways to connect and relate to everyone. What’s a fun fact about you? A fun fact about me is that I really like Frida Kahlo, a Mexican painter. I have a portrait of her in my office, and I visited her museum in Coyoacán, Mexico, earlier this year. Who has been your biggest source of inspiration? Without a doubt, my mom. I’m the youngest daughter of eight, and my mom always encouraged all of us to pursue our education. She instilled in me a strong work ethic. I have always seen her working hard, yet with the best attitude. When my older siblings moved out, and I suddenly became the oldest in the house, I began to understand just how hard my mom worked to put together family events and celebrations. I also acted as her translator, and to this day, whenever I translate something at Comar, it reminds me of where I come from. What is one thing you’d like others to know? Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15 because it falls on the anniversary of the independence of several Latin American countries. What is a dish from your culture you can’t live without? Definitely, chicken enchiladas verdes—and definitely homemade! Do you have any advice you could share with others in a similar role from a similar background? My best advice is to volunteer for everything, get involved in everything. You may not see the benefits immediately, but eventually, you’ll realize how much more knowledgeable you’ve become. It sets you apart. Whenever Comar asks for volunteers, I jump on it, so I’m part of the process rather than waiting for it to be passed down to me. www.comar.com
