This week, California banned legacy admissions at both public and private schools throughout the state—a move that will impact high-caliber institutions such as Stanford University and University of Southern California. The move could represent a consequential shift in the college admissions process nationwide as backlash against legacy admissions continues to build, particularly in the wake of the Supreme Court banning affirmative action. Despite public scrutiny of institutions’ admissions policies, widespread disapproval of legacy privileges, and a Department of Education investigation into Harvard’s use of legacy and donor preferences in admissions, Ivy League and other top universities continue to insist on the importance of legacy. If more states follow California’s lead, the decision will be out of these institutions’ hands, with state governments taking a larger role in determining what constitutes fairness in college admissions. As the landscape continues to shift at top institutions, check out Command Education’s Schools Pages to better understand what top schools like Stanford and USC look for in the admissions process! https://lnkd.in/eVu3DDus

"Do college admissions officers check our social media?" Might be the question I'm asked the most these days!! Could a meme you posted years ago shatter your dreams of attending Harvard? Can Columbia admissions officers read your Instagram comments? Does Stanford really care about the red solo cups in the pictures from your homecoming afterparty? We have the answers...

The start of the fall semester doesn’t just mark the return to classes and the changing of seasons—it is also the critical time in which students across the country officially begin their college applications. As students embark on the admissions process, one of the most significant components they will face is the oft-dreaded Common App personal essay. The personal essay offers students an opportunity to showcase their unique personalities, experiences, and aspirations and give their application dimension beyond numbers and statistics. A well-crafted and compelling essay can be the factor that sets a candidate apart from thousands of other applicants. However, in their desire to impress admissions committees, many students inadvertently fall into common traps that diminish their essay’s impact. Approaching the essay strategically and with an understanding of what colleges are looking for—as well as prevalent misconceptions about what they are looking for—will help students develop eye-catching essays. Here are five common mistakes students make when writing their personal essays—and, more importantly, how to avoid them to create a memorable piece of writing:

How do you write a letter to a friend that shows you’re a good candidate for the University of Pennsylvania? What reading list will help the Columbia University admissions committee understand your interdisciplinary interests? How can you convey your desire to attend Yale University by inventing a course description for a topic you’re interested in studying? These are the challenges students must overcome when writing their supplemental essays. Supplemental essays are a critical component of college applications—like the personal statement, they provide students with the opportunity to showcase their authentic voice and perspective beyond the quantitative elements of their applications. However, unlike the personal essay, supplemental essays allow colleges to read students’ responses to targeted prompts and evaluate their candidacy for their specific institution. For this reason, supplemental essay prompts are often abstract, requiring students to get creative, read between the lines, and ditch the traditional essay-writing format when crafting their responses. While many schools simply want to know “why do you want to attend our school?” others break the mold, inviting students to think outside of the box and answer prompts that are original, head-scratching, or downright weird. This year, the following five colleges pushed students to get creative—if you’re struggling to rise to the challenge, here are a few tips I wrote for Forbes on how to tackling their unique prompts: https://lnkd.in/d_6F9_cc

Today, the #CommonApplication opens for the 2024–25 application cycle. As the platform opens, officially signaling the start of the #collegeadmissions season, many students are starting the daunting process of crafting their personal statements. The personal statement is a crucial opportunity to showcase individuality, character, and intellectual depth. In only 650 words, students should seek to encapsulate their authentic voice and perspective through a compelling and creative narrative. The process requires thorough brainstorming, strategy, and editing in order to produce an essay that is distinct from those of thousands of other applicants vying for seats at top colleges. As students choose a prompt and begin brainstorming essays, here's my latest for Forbes on the key points to consider in order to create a stellar essay for each prompt: https://lnkd.in/ef3EDi-F
