#Nurses flew in from around the #US to join the 4th of 5 #LegislativeSummit days to support the Commission for Nurse Reimbursement to create a sustainable #economic model for the nursing profession. Yesterday, we had a Chairman of the Board of a large hospital system, a CNO, former President of AANA, frontline nurses from OR, ED, ICU, mental health, international nurses and nurse business owners. Their depth of experience, knowledge and alignment about creating an economic model that no longer places nurses as costs - but as a contributing provider in healthcare to the financial bottom line is critical to solving the nursing crisis. And our position is gaining attention and acknowledgment by those in Congress. A few highlights: 1. We met with 7 Senators and Congressmen staff - each who led the Legislators healthcare division. 2. Although legislators knew nurses are “costs” to healthcare systems - they did not know the mechanisms. They understood the flaw in the current design and asked what new proposals could exist that 1: would not drive up healthcare costs and 2. Not burden nurse documentation. 3. There was strong support to also get nurses designated as a #STEM profession - and many felt that effort would gather bipartisan support and have shared with #NursingIsStem! 4. Our frontline nurses all explained there personal experiences with assault due to patients lashing out since their basic needs were not being met - because there were simply never enough nurses to provide the care. 5. Our Chairman of a hospital and CNO explained how there is no dollars to invest into nursing - and a budget must be created to support quality patient care. Overall we received excellent feedback, many asked why we came to meet now in light of the election - we said that in the first 100 days of any new administration the priorities are established and we want Nursing to be top of mind - and that there are new ways to solve the crisis by solving the fundamental mechanism for any workforce issue - with an economic model that creates sustainability.
