Port Cleveland at work! Big thanks to @portofcleveland for a fascinating tour on Monday. CMTS federal team members and partners from Ohio State and local organizations toured the port to see operations underway and learn more about its history. Understanding the importance of the port locally and in the context of the region helped considerably with a CMTS-hosted Great Lakes/Cleveland supply chain tabletop exercise the following day.  #CMTS

IMO World Maritime Day theme for 2024 is "Navigating the future: safety first!" The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) is the main and most important international treaty concerning the safety of merchant ships. The SOLAS Convention contains 15 chapters covering a variety of topics.  2024 marks 50 years since SOLAS was adopted. From our origins as 13 British colonies, through every period of peace and conflict since, the U.S. Merchant Marine has been a pillar in this country’s foundation of prosperity and security. They power the world’s largest economy and strengthen our ties with trading partners around the world, all while supporting our military forces by shipping troops and supplies wherever they need to go. Ninety-one years ago, Congress declared National Maritime Day to commemorate the American steamship Savannah’s voyage from the United States to England, marking the first successful crossing of the Atlantic Ocean with steam propulsion. During World War II more than 250,000 members of the U.S. Merchant Marine served their country, with more than 6,700 giving their lives, hundreds being detained as prisoners of war, and over 800 U.S. merchant ships being sunk or damaged. Maritime Day is a time-honored tradition that recognizes one of our country’s most important industries. Each year, ceremonies and celebrations throughout the country recognize National Maritime Day and the people our maritime nation depends on. To honor the U.S. Merchant Marine and recognize the contributions of the American maritime industry, Maritime Administrator Ann Phillips invites you to join in celebrating National Maritime Day! In collaboration with United for Infrastructure Week, the U.S. Committee on the Marine Transportation System (CMTS) will host a sit down conversation on the Opportunities and Successes of Collaborative Port Funding with the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), the Port of Virginia, and the Maritime Administration (MARAD). CMTS Acting Director, Brian Tetreault will moderate a virtual Zoom panel with John Bressler (AAPA), Andrew Sinclair (Port of VA), and Peter Simons (MARAD). Discussions will focus on available funding opportunities for ports, applying for funding, port advocacy, successful funded projects, and port resiliency.
