This Black Friday, instead of buying from giant corporations, what if we leaned on our communities instead? At Commons, we’re huge fans of the community-driven circular economy: Yard sales! Buy nothing groups! Clothing swaps! So before we’re inundated with a week of nonstop overconsumption, we figured — Why not help folks connect with their community to snag some secondhand gems? That's how we came up with the Commons Earth Exchange. From Nov 15-17, we’re asking folks around the US (and the world!) to host and attend swaps, sales, and buy-nothing events in their communities. Want to join us? https://lnkd.in/gTXaKeFB

My new year's resolution this year was not to buy anything from Amazon. I wasn't a huuuge user to begin with, but committing to not using something AT ALL really shows you how much you rely on it, especially when it is something that makes acquiring things quickly soo easy. I absolutely love that Commons is hosting a No Amazon October and their list of alternative sustainable brands will very much come in handy for me. The biggest issue with Amazon is how easy it is - I love to see companies working to make sustainable alternatives feel just as easy. And trust me - it's not as hard as it sounds! It's not too late to start the No Amazon October challenge :)

We're hosting an event.. or actually.... YOU'RE hosting an event! At least, we hope you will! We're trying to host the world's largest weekend of community swaps, sales, and buy-nothings. Next month on November 15th, 16th, and 17th, we're asking you to spend some time in your community, whether that be sharing things you no longer need with friends, buying a new book from your neighbor, or swapping winter clothes with your local fashion club. If you'd like to host an event, it can be as big or small as you'd like it to be. Get creative or go with the basics. Totally up to you. So if you have a box of clothes you've been meaning to sell for months now, here's your chance! When you sign up to host an event, we'll send you a toolkit with all the info you could ever ask for (created with help from the one and only Alyssa Barber ) to plan your dream swap, sale, or buy-nothing event. We'll also give you posters and flyers to customize and put up around town. If you'd like your event to be public, we'll put it on the map so the Commons community can show up and show out. Plus, this initiative is GLOBAL! If you live far far away and have been sad to miss out on past Commons campaigns, this one's for you. So join us in the world's first Commons Earth Exchange! Sign up to attend or host here: https://lnkd.in/gtTKS3WX

Gifting isn't easy for everyone, and it certainly isn't cheap. On top of that, unwanted gifts can be wasteful and lead to piles of returns or trash. But becoming a more sustainable, low-waste gifter will make you a better gifter and save you money! In this week's episode of Second Nature, we give you dozens of great gift ideas from our community, and all of them are backed by the compelling, leading research of Dr. Julian Givi. We'll also talk about the carbon (and waste impact) of big holidays like Christmas. Listen here: https://lnkd.in/g39GTUfR Plus, If you want more gift ideas, we've got you covered! The Commons team curated gift guides for everyone on your list with over 300 unique, memorable gift ideas, including vintage items, experiences, and DIYs. Find them here: https://lnkd.in/gbbfeijw

🎁 If you want to gift more sustainably this holiday season, we found out that the first step is to become a more mindful gifter. We heard from listeners that the gifts they value most are gifts of time, gifts of service, or secondhand/vintage items. Stuff that they'll actually use and enjoy. Stuff that won't end up guiltily returned or trashed. And guess what? Those are the most sustainable gifts too. On the latest episode of Second Nature, we got dozens of sustainable gift ideas from listeners, and I got to chat with leading gifting researcher Julian Givi about how to be a better gifter. 🎧 Give it a listen! Listen to "Sustainable Gifting is Easier (and Cheaper) Than You Think" on Spotify, Apple podcasts, or wherever you listen to pods. So excited to see how our first "Community Voices" episode is resonating with folks 🤍. Climate anxiety seems to be at an all-time high, and with these community-only episodes, we're able to play out more of people's stories that we can't always fit into our usual episodes. I hope it gives listeners hope and the realization that they're not the "other." There are people out there who are worried and excited by the same thing they are. Thank you so much for sharing your story with us on the show, Adyasha Priyadarshini! Commons

Most of us today have some conscious or subconscious stories of climate anxiety. Academic loss, health issues, inaction, or worries for a sustainable and healthy future, climate anxiety is very much real, persistent, and serious. My climate anxiety peaked when I realised how interconnected climate change and environmental fluctuations are to the social issues like mental health and gender injustice. I am anxious, scared, and often helpless when I work with communities dealing with climate crisis in varied dimensions. Upon that the inaction in systems, passive laws, and stuck policies make climate anxiety worse. But this post is a shout out to all those who come from different walks and ages of life, hold their patience, and maintain the strong resolute when it comes to climate action. I am so glad that I could share and listen to community voices on healing climate anxiety on Second Nature, a podcast initiative on sustainability by Commons.
