Communities Come Together After Hurricane Helene When Hurricane Helene caused widespread power outages and significant challenges, our incredible team members, along with some amazing community partners, went above and beyond to support those in need. At Monterey Pass in Thomson, GA, Terrie Turner and James Wiederkehr held a cookout to feed residents after the storm knocked out power. The following day, residents gathered again at the pavilion, bringing food from their refrigerators and freezers to cook, socialize, and support each other. Even though power wasn’t restored until Thursday, October 3rd, the sense of community never wavered. At Ashton Village in Waynesboro, GA, Clinton Bates stepped up on Sunday, September 29th, grilling food for his residents with the help of two volunteers. Residents brought items from their fridges and freezers, turning the situation into a moment of connection and camaraderie. In South Carolina, at Wildwood, Laurel Street Village I, and Laurel Street Village II, Richard Rumsey, his wife Vicky, and their daughter Sharon distributed meals to over 60 residents on Wednesday, October 2nd. Richard generously purchased these meals from Redwood Café in Anderson, ensuring everyone was well taken care of during this tough time. A special mention goes to Troy Brookins of ABS Landscaping and his mother, Mrs. Louise Abney, who provided much-needed supplies to residents in Georgia. When several of our properties were in dire need, they immediately stepped in. Mrs. Abney supplied a truckload of food, snacks, diapers, water, ice, and even homemade vegetable soup. This incredible act of generosity was made possible with the help of Jack Stewart whose support and patience were invaluable throughout this effort. We also want to recognize the efforts of Ritchie Knoop and Joyce Young at McCormick Manor in South Carolina. Ritchie came in on Monday to assess the situation and did everything he could to assist the residents. On Tuesday and Wednesday, he gathered food packs and water, delivering them to all residents who were home. On Thursday, our community donated hot dogs, chili, and potato salad, which Ritchie grilled for everyone. Several family members of CMI team members all pitched in to help serve the residents. We are beyond grateful to all our team members, partners, and volunteers for their incredible acts of kindness and teamwork during this challenging time. Kudos to everyone for coming together when it mattered most! 👏

A message from our President & CEO, Dana Boole:

The devastation caused by Hurricane Helene left an indelible mark. As days pass and waters begin to recede, we paint a picture of this categorical storm’s force and impact. Lost lives. Homes and businesses wiped away. Previously bustling towns now unrecognizable. While dollars can eventually repair and replace where people lived, worked, and played; it cannot bring back loved ones. Furthermore, the impact on survivor’s mental health will take time, resources, and heart before they can mend. Property management personnel - our rockstars - are working tirelessly to protect the welfare of staff and residents. It’s particularly hard because these teammates - especially community managers and maintenance technicians - don’t merely view those impacted as residents in apartments. They are family, and when family suffers, they feel their pain. It’s personal. CAHEC and our partners are here to help. We will work within our means - in the short and long term - to identify and strategically deploy funds in an impactful and expeditious manner. We will do our part to make a difference. This journey will be long and stressful. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone.
