Creating long-term, affordable solutions for artists & arts and culture organizations to remain rooted in the Bay Area.
About us
CAST — Community Arts Stabilization Trust — is a community-centered real estate organization committed to ensuring artists and cultural workers can stay anchored where they create. We work in deep partnership with communities across the San Francisco Bay Area, particularly communities that have endured systemic oppression and historical underinvestment. CAST models new ways to secure and steward affordable, inclusive spaces for creative and cultural expression. We do this by applying real estate financing tools and structural models in innovative ways, building community knowledge and agency, and creating and holding space for visioning and arts activation. Our programs and services have helped arts organizations build pathways to ownership, enabled artists to secure long-term affordable leases, and created dedicated spaces for cultural connection and exchange. Together, we are building a new real estate paradigm in the Bay Area — one that recognizes the essential role of arts and culture and gives us all the space to dream. CAST has purchased and opened four arts buildings in central San Francisco, attracted exceptional support from the philanthropic, private and public sector, launched a city-wide mapping of cultural spaces through its online tool Culture Compass (culturecompass.org), and been cited as a creative placekeeping model in publications by the World Cities Culture Forum, LISC and Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. The Bay Area is at a crossroads. For years, the region’s astronomical real estate prices have made it nearly impossible for artists and arts and cultural organizations to secure space. Then, COVID changed everything. Commercial vacancies are at a record high, and prices have dropped to levels we haven’t seen in decades. But rising construction costs and high interest rates make accessing these vacant spaces tough for nonprofits. Now is a time for reimagination ⚡️ Introducing ☀️The Space to Dream Initiative☀️, a 10-year, CAST-led effort to secure affordable spaces for artists and arts organizations in the Bay Area. Built on over a decade of learning and past successes, this initiative aims to transform our downtowns through bold, interconnected strategies that create systemic change. Together, we can reimagine what’s possible for our cultural communities! Our Director of Community Engagement Tyese M. Wortham recently spent a day with the California Arts Council and the Creative Economy Workgroup learning about the past, present, and future of California’s Creative Economy. It was inspiring to hear from the brilliant minds representing creative workers across California. Their comprehensive discussion touched on everything from keeping and cultivating creatives in the state to building access to affordable spaces and housing through community-driven capital and ownership models. Like many others who participated, the day left us feeling hopeful and energized, knowing this incredible team is shaping the creative economy strategic plan for Governor Gavin Newsom. California's future in the arts is in good hands!
Seasoned leader and implementer with turnaround and startup experience. I enjoy assisting diverse teams with great ideas to refine their strategy, build durable programs and deliver meaningful results.
Yesterday California's Creative Economy Workgroup convened at El Teatro Campesino in San Juan Bautista. Some folks who couldn't make it urged those present to share insights, and they were *abundant*! Here are some personal takeaways on bright lights in the field, housing updates, workforce and economic development initiatives. If you are interested in following this work, please sign up for updates from the California Arts Council (linked in the article). Thanks for reading!

Have you heard of Arts & Climate CA: SF Bay Area 🌎? It’s a joint initiative focused on the needs of community-based arts and cultural organizations in relation to climate change. We know that for many organizations, managing payroll, rent, and day-to-day challenges makes it hard to focus on climate change. But this affects all of us—climate change is an issue multiplier that adds to the load of housing and health concerns, whether it’s your rising PG&E bill or the pollution affecting the air quality in your backyard. On October 23rd, connect with us at the Culture + Climate Exchange, an online event open to all artists, arts and cultural organizations, groups, and collectives interested in knowledge exchange on climate change’s impact on arts and culture 🎨🌱 Learn from your peers and exchange ideas on how we can lower our carbon footprint and build narrative change! 🗓️ Wednesday, October 23 ⏰ 5-7:15pm PST 📍Online via Zoom FREE RSVP: bit.ly/ccexchange2024 Presented by the Arts & Climate CA: San Francisco Bay Area Project Team & Partners: Community Arts Stabilization Trust, Emerald Cities Collaborative (ECC), The Center for Cultural Power, SPUR, Stanford University Arts #CultureClimateExchange #CASTSF #CommunityConversations #EmeraldCities #CenterForCulturalPower #TheWomensBuilding #ClimateAction #EnvironmentalJustice
