At our Community Care Center board meeting last week, Dr. Baldwin Smith, retired pediatric neurologist, shared a recent article from JAMA "Medicine-Both a Science (Care) and an Art (CARE)" (Strange TJ, Castellanos MR. Medicine-Both a Science (Care) and an Art (CARE). JAMA. 2024 Apr 23;331(16):1357-1358. doi: 10.1001/jama.2024.2508. PMID: 38568598). The authors emphasize that with technological advancements transforming medical care, "the timeless art of medicine (compassion and caring) remains a foundational aspect of patient-centered health care" (Trzeciak & Mazzarelli, 2019). The qualities of compassion, assistance, active listening, respect, and empathy "not only contribute to better patient outcomes and increased satisfaction, but also play a critical role in improving overall well-being" (Malenfant et al, 2022). CARE (compassion, assistance, respect, and empathy) - an acronym to guide all those providing medical care in a fast-paced, rapidly changing world.

In 2022, over $12.1 million worth of medications was dispensed at CCC. However, there is a decrease in the number of medications available through free or discounted programs which has significantly increased our costs for buying essential lifesaving and life-sustaining medications. Please consider supporting Community Care Center as we continue to take care of this community’s vulnerable population. For every dollar you donate, we can turn that into $9 worth of healthcare and medicine. https://lnkd.in/eN5NmY-a

CCC has thrived because we have such a generous community of volunteers who are medical professionals, interpreters, and general clinic support including our food pantry and distributions. In 2023, these volunteers logged almost 11,000 hours valued at over $500,000! Can't volunteer but still want to build a healthier community? Donate at: https://lnkd.in/eN5NmY-a

We are preparing for our year in clinic closing. On this last day, open for 2023. We are celebrating Dr. Bill Applegate. He is a volunteer provider at CCC and is retired from Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He gave the most volunteer hours to the clinic in 2023 out of our 275+ volunteers. He clocked 472 total hours providing care for our patients! 4️⃣7️⃣2️⃣😲🥳🤩 We are closed Thursday, December 21 through Monday, January 1. We will return to normal hours on January 2.

Our last food distribution event was (unfortunately) so popular we knew we needed to do it again before the holidays. Today is the day and we have been preparing! And we’ve had lots of help from our volunteers and other organizations. We have had so many partners, we hope we haven’t forgotten someone: Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC, The Campus Kitchen at Wake Forest, Food Lion, The Fellowship Ministry, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Career Center High School, Clemmons Food Pantry, Forsyth Country Day School, Union Cross Moravian Girl Scout troops. Thank you for helping feed hundreds in our neighborhood.

We are wearing pink for Women’s Health 💝 and Breast Cancer Awareness Month! 💗 Did you know that the Community Care Center holds our Gynecology Clinic three days a week? In the past year, our volunteer Gynecologists have completed 347 visits. We continue to coordinate with Novant Health to provide mammograms for our patients. So far, in first 9 months of 2023, 199 women have received mammograms! This bus was funded through the fundraising of The Women’s Council Novant Health Foundation! 💖
