The Community College Baccalaureate Association criticized Gov. Gavin Newsom's veto of two bills to pilot bachelor's of science in nursing at California Community Colleges. "This decision represents a missed opportunity, for an already suffering field, that will significantly impact California’s healthcare systems, workforce and, most importantly, the citizens impacted by inconsistent care," CCBA President Angela Kersenbrock said. The League is disappointed (to say the least) at the Governor’s decision to veto SB 895 (Roth). Yet, we would like to acknowledge our collective accomplishment of sending the bill to the Governor, with bipartisan support. The bill received overwhelming support from the legislature, with only a handful of “No” votes, despite strong opposition from the CSU and private/independent colleges. https://lnkd.in/gTBd6hxX

Monday closed the 2023-24 California legislative session. Governor Newsom signed and vetoed the last remaining bills on his desk, signaling the final actions of the 2023-2024 legislative session. The Legislature introduced around 5,000 bills this year, and around 1,200 bills were sent to the Governor. The state’s legislative process ensures public input and debate on each legislative item, yet, even if a bill achieves success via the legislative process, the ultimate decision remains in the Governor’s hands. This year, the Governor vetoed 15.7% of bills on his desk. The League’s End of Session Legislative Recap highlights key actions taken by the Legislature and the Governor this year.
