Widespread shortcomings in community health programs result in CHWs being absent, ill-equipped, or facing grave dangers. And despite doing great implementation, NGOs can face barriers scaling through healthcare providers. So a billion people will never see a health worker. At Community Health Impact Coalition we’re working together to dismantle these barriers and close the healthcare delivery gap. #proCHWs #healthforall

Would you volunteer to help care for your community? How about providing essential medical care to entire communities for 40 hours a week, for free? These are the questions around a million CHWs working for India's Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) programme have been forced to ask themselves, as their roles and responsibilities have expanded since 2009. ASHA workers, originally providing limited services such as counselling and public health education a few hours a week with 5-10 performance indicators, are now delivering vaccines, dealing with emergency health concerns, and spending up to 40 hours a week delivering government health programs with 74 performance indicators. This is their story: https://lnkd.in/eMKS7xkd

In the days since #UNGA79, our key takeaway is emerging: the resounding conversation from diverse perspectives was that the climate emergency is amplifying health inequities, and women and girls are affected the most. While we’re motivated by this rhetoric, we’re even more eager for tangible action. Our highlights from the week were solutions-oriented: In partnership with Last Mile Health and with support from The Aspen Institute, Co-Impact, and Clinton Global Initiative, we convened a private roundtable on achieving gender equity in the community health workforce. We heard promising examples from President ELLEN JOHNSON SIRLEAF and CHW Advocate margaret odera on how centering women as providers and patients can unlock improved health for all. As a founding member of the Community Health Impact Coalition, we supported their event on Securing the Future with ProCHWs. Sania Nishtar, CEO of Integrate Health’s partner Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, committed to addressing the triple burden women community health workers face. IH’s own Sahaletou, Marie Yelebo spoke at a virtual side event hosted by Together Women Rise sharing lessons learned from Togo on how grassroots advocacy can influence global policy. We did however, face a challenge. Integrate Health-supported #CHW advocate from Togo, Rebecca Tchotchokou, was scheduled to be in New York, but her visa was denied. Disappointed but undeterred, Rebecca shared her advocacy message via video recording, which was screened at Together Women Rise’s event. We will continue to fight for equity, until all proximate leaders have a seat at the table to speak truth to power.

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting Carolyne Faith, CHW Engagement Manager at the Community Health Impact Coalition, at our #Zanzibar office. While Carolyne was in town for the Tanzania Health Summit, we used the opportunity to introduce her to a group of dedicated community health workers from the Jamii ni Afya Program. These community health workers provide essential maternal, newborn, and child health services across Zanzibar. Many of them are among the first 60 participants to complete the Community Health Impact Coalition's online advocacy training for CHWs, which is now being tested in Swahili. We love seeing this initiative arming Zanzibar's community health workforce to advocate for improved community health! ✊🏾
