Before broaching the Parents Needing Help at Home subject, it can be helpful to think about why aging parents may be reluctant to acknowledge they need help. One of the main reasons aging parents might resist help is because it serves as an outright reminder that they are getting older and might not be able to do everything they once could. This realization can be tough to accept, as it feels like a loss of autonomy and independence. For some, it may feel that they are taking that first step into needing “care.” For others, they may resent being told what to do. Considering these emotional hurdles is the first step in addressing their concerns empathetically. Of those elderly with dementia, as many as half of them will live in a home with a gun. Firearms may have been a constant and significant part of their life and their identity having possessed and carried them their entire life. To help families deal with dementia, she says, the best thing is to have a conversation about what to do with the guns before a parent is too far gone to have it. How old is considered old? The answer to that question appears to be changing as people live longer, retire later, and maintain higher levels ofphysical and mental health into their older years.  Studies have conversely shown that people with positive views of aging are less likely to develop dementia and tend to live longer than people with more negative views of aging. People who see themselves as younger than their actual age have also exhibited slower memory declines, better cognitive performance, and reduced symptoms of depression, while people who perceive themselves as older have a higher risk of mortality.
