Back to School Safety In the next two weeks, we will see many students returning to school after the summer break. Pedestrian-vehicle injuries are a leading cause of death for children ages 5 to 14. Kids are back from summer camp, school will be in session again soon, and school buses will be out on the streets. This means drivers need to increase safety around school zones, crosswalks, bus stops, and anywhere children may be playing outside. https://lnkd.in/gwJsV7zU

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has granted an exemption that is expected to apply to thousands of commercial learner’s permit holders annually. In a notice that is scheduled to be published in the Federal Register on Tuesday, July 30, FMCSA announced its decision to approve an exemption request from Covenant Logistics. In 2022, The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) launched its Congressionally mandated Safe Driver Apprenticeship Pilot (SDAP) Program, which allows 18–20-year-olds with an intrastate commercial driver’s license (CDL) to drive interstate by meeting specific safety standards and upon successful completion of the program. The SDAP Program is a great opportunity for motor carriers to shape the future of their workforce by recruiting, hiring, and developing apprentice drivers (students and recent graduates) in this age range who are interested in exploring career opportunities in the trucking industry. https://lnkd.in/gW3bispt

See below for tips from OHS on how motorists can drive more safely around commercial vehicles. - If you can’t see their side mirrors, they can’t see you. - Don’t hang out in “no zones”. - Try to steadily pass and avoid staying in their blind - spots for too long. - Make sure you can see the whole truck in your rearview mirror before changing lanes. - Allow enough space for the vehicle to make a turn. Larger vehicles need a larger space to make a turn. Don’t get caught under a truck. https://lnkd.in/eV4Ay4_B
