Updates

  • Last month, Intern Associate Vanessa Fernandez Veloquio designed and led a vision boarding workshop with Texas Appleseed’s Criminal Justice Project. She created the curriculum to help participants better understand the connections between the mind, brain, and body in a safe environment. As the project team worked to create their vision boards, they engaged in meaningful dialogue within the community about their learning and aspirations. The project was a huge success and participants left with a better understanding of what they were looking for in their careers and personal life and how to move forward.

    • As a lesbian-identifying therapist who has personally navigated the impact of stress and trauma through an autoimmune disease, I bring a profound empathy and understanding to my work with LGBTQ+ individuals. Specializing in trauma, anxiety, self-esteem, body image, compassion fatigue, and stress, I integrate mindfulness, acceptance and commitment therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy into my practice.
  • Con Safos Counseling Masters of Social Work interns drafted a research paper on “historical practices, systemic biases, and the resulting disparities” of #mentalhealth care for marginalized populations. Mental health services are not immune to the discrimination in healthcare. With LGBTQ+, BIPOC, refugee, and immigrant communities experiencing additional hardship for their identities, access to equitable care is necessary. https://lnkd.in/gMJ2Rgsp

    • Discrimination in the United States is in the very roots that structure the U.S. government, affecting every institution and perpetuating systemic racism. The mental health care system in the United States is no different.
  • Our Masters Social Work Intern, Jesuye Olabisi,BSW, wrote an op-ed two years ago, highlighting the racial disparities in health care. Con Safos was created as a safe and open space for marginalized folx. It’s just as important to expose the issues with our current systems as it is to solve them. Jesuye’s work highlights an issue that isn’t talked about enough. Stay tuned for an updated version of her op-ed continuing the call for healthcare equity. https://lnkd.in/g5PiHDp4

    • "Statistics show that more than 80% of people of color receive less than half the benefits and treatments in healthcare compared to almost 90% of whites who receive full benefits and treatment. "

Meet lead therapist Sarah Alexis Shaney! Alexis created this practice as a way to bridge community and mental healing. Coming from a Mexican-American family as a queer, non-binary femme, they’ve felt the strain of “isms.” Their experiences allow them to identify the root of one's emotional distress and provide tools to manage those emotions. They hold a Master of Science and Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin. Since graduating, they’ve struggled to find a sustainable career where they can assist others and themselves in being the most authentic and caring for the whole self. Con Safos, which comes from the Mexican American street art and creative community, means with respect. You can access their full story by clicking on the link below! https://lnkd.in/gzkAGaps

    • As a survivor of complex developmental trauma, it is my passion to walk with others on the same journey of interpersonal and collective healing. I work closely with clients to identify the root of one's emotional distress, such as anger, helplessness, and depression, using empathetic and relational therapeutic techniques and providing tools to help manage those emotions.
