🌟Empowering Women in Tech: Be Authentic. Be Audacious 🌟 Current 2024 just ended, but we’re still thinking about the amazing conversations we had with women technology leaders while we were there. On Day 2 of the biggest event in data streaming, we had the privilege of hearing from an inspiring group of leaders during the "Women in Data: Building Your Personal Brand" panel. This dynamic discussion focused on how women in tech can define, build, and grow their personal brands while navigating career and life challenges along the way. Some key themes emerged immediately, beginning with the idea that personal brand is a reflection of your values, skills, and authenticity. One standout insight came from Gayathri Veale, principal cloud infrastructure engineer at Indeed, who shared that “your personal brand is how people think about you after you leave the room”—a strong reflection that mindful actions and words are key to building a reputation that resonates long after the conversation ends. For many of these leaders, authenticity is at the core of their personal brand and part of how they leave a strong impression. For Vilma Siddiqi, senior IT manager at United Airlines, that means genuinely caring for people, creating safe environments for her team, and ensuring that her actions reflect her values, even in tough moments. When it comes to overcoming setbacks at work and in life, all panelists agreed: resilience is key. Challenges will come, but it’s how you handle them that defines you. Liliana Gonzalez, Azure ISV Alliances head at Microsoft Americas, stressed the importance of focusing on what you can control during difficult times, rather than losing traction on things beyond your influence. Danica Fine, staff developer advocate at Confluent, noted that she views moments that don’t go according to plan as opportunities to be better the next time around. She also emphasized that asking for feedback is essential for growth—don’t take it personally, but use it as fuel for improvement. And speaking of improvement, how should women go about gaining the confidence they need to become more visible and successful in their roles? Gayathri advised that confidence is built through repetition, learning, and “becoming audacious.” To create space for yourself, she encourages women to "bring your own invisible chair" when there’s no room at the table. In closing, the panelists urged women in tech to celebrate their wins, find mentors and advocates, and build communities that lift one another up. As Vilma said, “We need to support each other.” 💡 To all the women in tech: Own your brand. Show up authentically. And become audacious. Interested in more from Current 2024?
