How do i fet my child to use coping skills? It is helpful if you teach your child coping skills before they are needed. This way you can prompt the behavior “hey bud, try a deep breathe” However if you’re in a pinch, do the coping skill with them. “Come here let’s take a few deep breaths.” Or “take a deep breath with me/like me” Back to School? How can I get my child to tell me about their day? When I ask them “how was your day?” They tell me good / fine / ok 😩 It’s the question that needs work. Here are two examples of check-ins I use with clients and my own children . They WILL get you a better response if you consistently use them (give it time, people have bad days and might be a little unsure first if this is a new activity). The first check in helps identify and scale emotions. Both are important. My coping skills will change depending on how intense my Feelings are. Scaling your emotions can also help you re-evaluate if the coping skills you used were effective (or your child). My favorite check in is peaches and pits. It’s a great way to reflect on the day or week. It gives you insight into both what’s going well and what’s not going well. Please try one or both of them out and report back in the comments below. #parents #parentsoftiktok #parentingtips #backtoschool #emotionsofachild #schoolanxiety #backtoschoolstruggle #emotionalchild

Do you need to help your kids with their emotions? A family meeting is a great way to manage transitions, because transitions are hard. As you adjust to changes, this meeting can be your constant; Creating a sense of safety, connection, and care in your family. Schedule a consistent day and time to meet and be consistent. If you can’t follow through on the meeting it will erode the trust within the family. You might consider some basic rules / guidelines around expected behavior for all. Then do a check in and address any other necessary items. You can make this lots of FUN! It doensnt have to be so serious. #backtoschool #parenting #parentingtipsandhacks #parenttok #parentingtips101 #anxiousmom #anxiouskids #anxiousdad #anxiouskidsanxiousparents

How’s that back to school transition going? If you want to do it with less stress keep watching this series. Implement one or all of the recommendations and you’ll notice that going back to school becomes less stressful and more enjoyable . Practicing your own coping skills and helping your child learn theirs is an important part of the action plan. Rhythmic activity is ALWAYS a good idea and deep breathing is a something that we can pretty much do anytime so it’s a great one to practice . Make sure you are taking DEEP breaths not those anxious chest breaths. Huberman recommends a physiological sigh to calm the body (2 inhales then exhale). But, at the end of the day, the best tools are ones you (or your child) will actually use. Make sure to follow along so you dont miss the rest of this series. #backtoschool #parenting #parentingtipsandhacks #parenttok #backtosschool2023 #parentingtips101

Ready for a juicy pro tip? Coping skills are important for navigating stress responses. And yet sometiems they seem to not work, right?! While this is true, it might also be that you have no system in place to evaluate efficacy. 🤯 Sometimes a few deep breaths just isnt what i want to do. And sometimes, a few deep breaths helps a little bit but isnt enough to take me from 😡 to 😀 Here’s the tip: Identify the feeling with a word or phrase, it can describe an emotion or sensation in the body. Then scale the intensity Use your coping skill, or have your child Then check back in, how do you feel now and how intense is it? (Use the same method so you can compare apples to aples). If this is new, it will take time for you or your child to get the hang of it. Do your best, and be as consistent as you can. Side note: sometimes a coping skill just isnt what we need in the moment, not because its bad, just not what works at that time. So be flexible and creative. And try to keep it light. #backtoschool #parenting #parentingtips #parenttok

Why doesn’t my kid just relax!?!?! Well, they have high emotions because they are human, just like you. If they arent able to independently use coping skills (which is decelopmentally approariate ☺️) then they meed support. Sitting with them and breathing, or any other tools you are practicing will require parent support. You will likely have to model the behavior and prompt them to use the tools. The more consistent (and calm) you are the easier this will get. You got this! Please feel free to ask any questions below! #backtoschool #parenting #parentingtips #parenttok #school

Journaling is a great practice. I recommend it for anyone who has racing thoughts. For me it helps me clear my head, access creative ideas that seem to be buried in the back if rhe junk drawer within my mind, and practice self compassion by speaking to myself with kindness. My dogs love my pens. And my lap. Journalling may be a tomorow practice. #journaling #emotionalregulation #clearyourmind #racingthoughts #boxerdog #creativity

Writing as a self care practice or coping skill ✍️ First things first, if it’s self-care, it’s more proactive, you are regulated and maintaining your regulated state (calm, balanced, adaptable). If it’s a coping skill, or self- soothing, the purpose of the tool is to move from dysregulated (worried, anxious, depressed, restless) to a more regulated state. Your toolbox should always be robust! Here are 3 different writing practices to help you maintain, or move towards, a regulated state. #1 To-do lists Listing all the tasks you need to accomplish can be an effective step to get organized. Then you can prioritize tasks, complete them, and mark them as done✅ (that last part is the best). #2 Morning Pages My practice is based on the book The Artists Way by You write for 3 pages (you can modify if needed) but it’s meant to be clear out space for new creative ideas. Some days are easier than others, but the goal is to fill three pages, which allows you to move through feeling stuck, develop a habit, and have discipline regardless of how you feel. #3 Pennebaker writing A more focused writing practice on a specific topic you are wrestling with. This practice is roughly 4 days of writing on the same topic for 15-30 minutes per writing session. Check out podcast episode “A Writing Protocol for Health” (watch roughly minute 18-35 for the directions). As always, don’t get locked in to doing the “right way.” Feel free to adapt these practices to make them your own. For my fellow to-do listers, are you team hand written or digital to do list? #selfcare #writing #journaling #todolist #organization #morningpages #braindump
